Gwyneth Paltrow is making a major return to the screen, set to star in a new Netflix feature film adapting the explosive memoir, Strangers. The streamer confirmed today that it won a fierce six-way bidding war for the rights to the #1 New York Times bestseller by Belle Burden.

This is another huge get for Netflix’s growing library of “book club” adaptations. If you haven’t heard the buzz around this one yet, you’re in for a wild ride.

What is Strangers about?

Strangers: A Memoir of Marriage is the real-life story of Belle Burden’s two-decade marriage and its sudden, shocking end. The book, which shot to the top of the New York Times bestseller list in mid-January and has camped out there for eight weeks, first gained traction from a viral Modern Love essay.

The memoir follows Burden, a woman with an Ivy League pedigree and a seemingly perfect life, as her husband of 20 years abruptly walks out on her for someone else. It’s been called a “hypnotic nail-biter” and a “must-read for every wife—and husband,” exploring themes of narcissistic abuse and the chilling realization that you may not know the person you share your life with at all.

The book’s official logline gives a glimpse into the premise:

“In March 2020, Belle Burden was safe and secure with her family at their house on Martha’s Vineyard, navigating the early days of the pandemic together… Then, with no warning or explanation, her husband of twenty years announced that he was leaving her. Overnight, her caring, steady partner became a man she hardly recognized.”

Who’s behind the adaptation?

The project comes with some serious creative power. Two-time Academy Award-nominee Stacey Sher (Erin Brockovich, Django Unchained) is attached to produce. The screenplay will be penned by Heidi Schreck, the Tony-nominated playwright and screenwriter known for What the Constitution Means to Me. Author Belle Burden is also on board as an executive producer, alongside Paltrow.

A Big Return to Form for Gwyneth Paltrow

While she’s been busy building her Goop empire and recently wowed critics in the A24 hit Marty Supreme, Strangers feels like a return to the heavy-hitting dramatic roles that made Paltrow a household name. Her turn in Marty Supreme, which snagged an impressive nine Academy Award nominations, has left audiences eager to see her tackle more complex characters.

This will be Paltrow’s second major project with Netflix, following her role in Ryan Murphy’s two-season series, The Politician.

This acquisition is a clear indicator of Netflix’s ongoing strategy to corner the market on literary adaptations, adding to an already exciting slate that includes movies like People We Meet on Vacation and Remarkably Bright Creatures. The streamer is known for snapping up the rights to dozens of books at any given time, constantly looking for the next big hit to bring to the screen.

We’ll be keeping a close eye on this one as more news about the director and full cast is announced.
