Jamie Bell, Charlie Heaton, Jessica Brown Findlay, and Lucy Karczewski Join 1950s ‘Peaky Blinders’ Sequel Series for Netflix

The Peaky Blinders universe is officially expanding into a new decade. Following the blockbuster debut of the recent feature film, Netflix and the BBC have unveiled the cast and story details for a highly anticipated Peaky Blinders sequel series—and it looks like the Shelby legacy is in very dangerous hands.

As we previously reported late last year, the new project has already been given a massive two-season order (consisting of two 6×60-minute series) and will introduce the next generation of the Shelby family. The name of the series is still up in the air. Netflix is referring to it as “Peaky Blinders (Sequel): Season 1” whereas we’ve also seen it referred to as Peaky 1954.

Taking up the mantle of Tommy Shelby’s oldest son, Duke, is BAFTA-winning actor Jamie Bell (All of Us Strangers, Rocketman). Netflix has also just dropped the gritty first-look image of Bell in character, and it’s clear Duke is stepping into his father’s formidable shoes.

He will be joined by Stranger Things alumni Charlie Heaton (Industry), who is stepping out of the Upside Down to co-lead the new generation of Brummie gangsters.

Also confirmed for the cast are Jessica Brown Findlay (Harlots, Downton Abbey), Lashana Lynch (The Day of The Jackal, No Time to Die)—whose casting we exclusively teased yesterday—and Lucy Karczewski (Stereophonic), who will be making her television debut. Details on their specific roles are being kept strictly under wraps and will be announced at a later date.

We’ve got a bunch more names we’ve learned are starring in the series and will be covering them as and when we can.

What is the new Peaky Blinders series about?

Series creator and writer Steven Knight is reigniting his world in the 1950s. The new series will pick up a full ten years after the events of Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man.

Here is the official logline for the upcoming series:

“In this new era of Peaky Blinders, a decade after World War Two, the race to rebuild Birmingham becomes a brutal contest of mythical dimensions. This is a city of unprecedented opportunity and jeopardy. At its blood-soaked heart is Duke Shelby (Jamie Bell): older, wiser, more ambitious, and most certainly more dangerous.”

Speaking on the major casting news, creator Steven Knight shared his excitement for the franchise’s new chapter: “I am thrilled that we are announcing a new era of Peaky Blinders, moving the story to post-war Birmingham in the early 50s. We are incredibly fortunate to have Jamie Bell taking the role of Tommy Shelby’s oldest son, Duke, and to have the incredible Charlie Heaton also leading the cast. There are more exciting cast announcements to come, and Peaky is on the road again.”

Production Details and Release

The new series is currently being filmed in and around Digbeth Loc. Studios in Birmingham (though filming also recently kicked off in Stoke-on-Trent).

It is produced by Banijay UK’s Kudos (SAS Rogue Heroes, House of Guinness) and Garrison Drama (Peaky Blinders series 1-6, Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man). For fans in the UK, the series will premiere on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, while Netflix will carry the series globally for the rest of the world.
