This free Vancouver patio offers sweeping city views from a lush rooftop garden

8 April 20263 Mins Read

No reservation is needed to access what might just be Vancouver’s most scenic patio ever. Perched atop the Vancouver Public Library’s Central Branch, this outdoor third space is open to visitors year-round, every single day. And lucky for you, the sun is out all week long, so now is the perfect time to visit.

Multi-level rooftop patio

Located on the upper levels of the Central Library, the free-to-access rooftop patio is an idyllic spot to soak up the sun, sweeping city and mountain views, and enjoy a snack or beverage.

Rooftop garden and terraces

On Level 9, you’ll find the lush rooftop Phillips, Hager, and North Garden, which were named after city builders and visionaries Art Phillips, Bob Hager and Rudy North.

The entry to the garden is named in honour of Phillips, Hager & North Investment Management’s (PH&N’s) fourth founding partner, Dick Bradshaw. All four men contributed greatly to the City of Vancouver through their numerous charitable pursuits.

The scenic garden consists of drought-resistant local greenery, including a mix of arbutus hedge, honeysuckle, white roses, lavender and coral bark maple tree. According to the VPL, there are also 52 solar panels installed along the roof exterior.

“Whether you are seeking a respite from your busy day or a place to connect with friends, it is Vancouver’s natural meeting place,” reads the VPL’s website.

On Level 8 of the library, there are north and south terraces with equally stunning views. The north, of course, faces the North Shore Mountains, and the south is attached to the RBC Lounge, which serves as an ideal lunch or picnicking spot.

Finally, the enclosed Kermani Family Garden awaits as a “pocket garden,” viewable from the Pat Graham Reading Room.

Know before you go

The Vancouver Public Library’s rooftop patio is open at the Central Branch downtown daily, at the following times:

  • Monday to Thursday: 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
  • Friday: 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Saturday: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Sunday: 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Note that smoking of any kind is prohibited on the rooftop, and while photography is encouraged, visitors are urged to respect the privacy of fellow library patrons.

So before you book that expensive happy hour hang, consider taking your next sunbathing session to the roof of the VPL.

Where: 350 West Georgia St.
