Disney-owned 20th Century Studios is hoping to turn spooky Roblox hit 99 Nights in the Forest into a feature film, according to a new report from The Hollywood Reporter. It will be the first game adaptation by 20th Century Studios, but at least the fourth Roblox game that Hollywood is trying to build into a film franchise.
99 Nights in the Forest was released on the Roblox platform in June 2025 and became a runaway success. The game is both a top-10 all-time earner on Roblox and among the most popular games ever released on the platform. 99 Nights in the Forest has racked up 26 billion lifetime visits and peaked at 14 million concurrent players, according to an official Roblox creator profile of the game’s three-person development team.
The premise of 99 Nights in the Forest is simple: “Build a camp with friends. Something is watching you.” While the genre of kid-friendly horror certainly isn’t unique, based on the popularity of the Five Nights at Freddy’s franchise both in video games and film, it’s a foundation for success.
“The team at Grandma’s Favourite Games are exactly the kind of bold, imaginative creators we love working with at 20th Century Studios, with world-building ideas that feel innately cinematic,” said David Greenbaum, president of 20th Century Studios and of Disney’s live-action arm, in a news release. “99 Nights in the Forest has already connected with millions of players worldwide, and we’re excited to build on that foundation for audiences everywhere.”
“Growing up, Disney and 20th films were a huge part of our childhood, so collaborating with such legendary and enduring studios feels surreal,” added the game’s creators. “We’re excited to explore the world of 99 Nights in the Forest on a broader stage and to create some scares in an entirely new medium.”
Three other popular Roblox experiences are also being mined for movie audiences, including hit games Grow A Garden and Steal a Brainrot. Those two movie adaptations are being spearheaded by Story Kitchen, the producers behind the Sonic the Hedgehog film franchise, the live-action Life is Strange TV series, and multiple Tomb Raider projects. The third comes from Wind Sun Sky Entertainment, a Vancouver-based production company, which is producing a film based on Jailbreak, a cops-and-robbers-style Roblox game.
Hollywood studios and producers are turning to Roblox, with its broad selection of narrative-light games, to find the next A Minecraft Movie or The Super Mario Bros. Movie. These properties afford filmmakers plenty of creative space to adapt popular titles into movies, just like Roblox games. With tens of millions of players each, Roblox could be a major resource for the future of video game movie adaptations, which have been notoriously tricky for Hollywood to crack.
In 2026 alone, major movie studios are going all in on video game adaptations, including The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Mortal Kombat 2, Street Fighter, Resident Evil, The Angry Birds Movie 3, and Madden. Movies based on Death Stranding and Elden Ring are also in the works, as is a fourth Sonic the Hedgehog film. But not everyone is going AAA for their video game movies: One of 2026’s biggest box-office successes is Markiplier’s Iron Lung. That project and a flood of planned Roblox movies may show that there’s plenty of opportunity for video game movies to expand beyond conventional thinking.
