One of the warmest lakes in the Rocky Mountains is just a short drive from Calgary

15 May 20263 Mins Read

If you’ve ever dipped a toe into a lake in the Rocky Mountains, you already know that most of them are absolutely freezing. But just over an hour’s drive from Calgary, in Banff National Park, lies a lake that is a rare exception.

Johnson Lake is one of the warmest lakes in the Rockies, according to Travel Alberta, making it one of the few places where a mountain swim does not immediately feel like an ice bath.

Nestled between Mount Rundle and Cascade Mountain, Johnson Lake is one of those spots in Banff that actually makes you want to stay a while instead of just passing through.

Because the lake is not glacier-fed, it’s much warmer than most surrounding lakes. Nonetheless, it’s still a little chilly, but not in that instant “I need to get out right now” way you get at places like Moraine Lake.

In the summer, a small sandy beach area turns into the main hangout spot. You will see plenty of people basking in the sun, swimming out into the lake, paddleboarding, kayaking, and more.

And if swimming isn’t really your thing, there are so many other ways to take in the views of the lake, including the 3 km trail surrounding it. The trail winds right along the shoreline and gives you constant views of the mountains reflecting off the water, with plenty of open viewpoints and shady forest sections along the way.

It’s a super relaxed walk, nothing too intense, and honestly just a nice way to keep enjoying the lake from different angles.

What to know before you go

Johnson Lake is located off the Lake Minnewanka Loop Road and is fairly easy to access by car. Parking tends to fill up quickly on warmer days, so it’s important to arrive early to secure a spot.

The lake is most popular during July and August, when temperatures are at their highest, making it the best time of year to visit if you’re looking to take a dip in the water. But even then, the water stays cold compared to a typical beach, and swimming is at your own risk as there are no lifeguards on site.

There are basic amenities like public washrooms available, but the overall setup is quite simple, so come prepared with whatever you need to enjoy a full lake day.

So if you’re looking for an easy lake day where you can swim, chill and not instantly freeze the second you get in the water, Johnson Lake is definitely one to add to your list this summer.

When: Open year-round
Time: Open 24 hours
Where: Located off Lake Minnewanka Loop Rd., Banff, Alta. (turn right at the Banff Avenue exit off the Trans Canada Highway)
Cost: Free (parking starting at $17.50 per day)
