North America’s largest and longest-running Fringe Festival takes place in Edmonton

16 June 20263 Mins Read

Edmonton is going to be taken over with art, performances, and so much more this summer, all thanks to the Fringe Festival.

The Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival is ranked as one of the top five Fringe Theatre Festivals in the world, standing next to Edinburgh, Scotland, and Adelaide, Australia. According to its website, it’s also the largest and longest-running festival of its kind in North America. Since 1982, it’s only grown more and more, and continues to flourish as one of Edmonton’s most iconic festivals.

Here, the team embraces the teachings of Tatawaw, a Nehiyawewin phrase meaning “Welcome, there is room.” At any Fringe Festival, it’s important to know that everyone is radically welcome.

“Together, we are allies. We are neighbours, we are friends, we celebrate all we have been given and honour our relationships and shared connections by paying forward all that we can,” reads the organization’s website.

What to expect

For 11 days starting on Aug. 13, Old Strathcona will be absolutely booming with artistic energy.

From somebody who’s been “fringing” since they were young, the feeling of being in Old Strathcona during the festival season is like none other. There’s truly something magical in the air during Fringe season. Without fail, you’ll always hear a story about a play, a musical, or something simply unexplainable.

Although not much information has been shared about this year’s iteration of the fest, there are some key dates to keep in mind while you’re waiting in anticipation.

On July 29, the festival guide will be released. This means you’ll be able to see what shows are going on alongside more important information. The organization gives people enough time to ruminate on what productions to see. Actual show tickets don’t go on sale until Aug. 5.

Indoor show tickets will range from $9 to $20, while all outdoor shows, events, and activities are free! Don’t forget: ice-cold beverages and amazing eats will be available for purchase all around the festival grounds.

There’s also one last thing to remember before you head into this city-wide celebration.

“No matter how you fringe, one thing is for certain: Fringe is for you because fringing is for everyone,” remind the organizers.

When: Thursday, Aug. 13, 2026, to Sunday, Aug. 23, 2026
Time: Various times

Cost: TBA
