Western Canada’s largest Caribbean arts festival has been celebrated in Edmonton for over 40 years

19 June 20263 Mins Read

Cariwest takes three days out of the year to show Edmonton the rich history, traditions, and contributions of the Caribbean diaspora through a powerful festival.

Each year, Cariwest gets bigger and better. With a parade and a village for folks to explore, this festival introduces people to Caribbean culture and delves deep into what makes it so special.

According to the fest itself, Cariwest began in 1984 as part of the Klondike Days Parade (now K-Days) as a way for Caribbean immigrants in Edmonton to celebrate and share their culture. Organized by The Western Carnival Development Association, a non-profit organization under the Societies Act, the group has been putting together the celebration ever since.

What to expect

Taking place in August, this weekend is going to be like no other before.

Throughout the weekend, Sir Winston Churchill Square will be filled with Caribbean food and traditions. For the whole three days, you can explore what the Caribbean Village has to offer, and I’m sure it’s going to be a lot of fun to stroll through. I’d keep an eye out on their socials for what exactly to expect.

On Saturday, Aug. 8, it’s going to be about time for the Cariwest Parade. Truthfully, this is my favourite time of year, because the streets absolutely light up with performances and colourful outfits.

2026 brings the largest parade yet, and it’s shaping up to be Edmonton’s largest summer parade period end. You’ll be able to follow along the almost two-kilometre route through downtown Edmonton, starting at 108th Street and 99th Avenue, along Jasper Avenue, eventually ending up in Sir Winston Churchill Square.

The festival recommends finding your space early to experience the best of the Caribbean music, vibrancy and pageantry.

If you’re trying to find out where to park in anticipation of the festival, the organizers have already got you covered. You can take a look at this Impark map, which the festival created, showing the lots available nearby. It’s honestly pretty convenient if you ask me.

This weekend will definitely be another one you won’t want to miss. Whether you’re taking part all weekend or just stopping by the square to see what’s going on, it’ll be an event you’re glad you showed up for.

When: Friday, Aug. 7, to Sunday, Aug. 9, 2026
Time: TBA
Where: Sir Winston Churchill Square, Edmonton, Alta.
Cost: Free
