This popular Calgary park was once owned by the ‘Czar of the West’

4 August 20262 Mins Read

Before it became a popular spot for walking, wetlands, and wildlife viewing, Pearce Estate Park was one part of a massive riverside estate.

Located along the Bow River in southeast Calgary, the park’s land has been used for many different purposes over the years.

According to the City of Calgary, the wetlands were originally part of a riverine forest complex before being used for agriculture when William Pearce, one of Calgary’s most influential early figures, acquired the land.

Pearce was a prominent pioneer who played a major role in the development of Western Canada. He was born in Ontario in 1848 and later became a surveyor. This career took him across the country, including work with the Red Deer River Settlement and surveying the international boundary.

Due to his influence over the region’s resources and development, Pearce was sometimes known as the “Czar of the West.”

After moving to Calgary in 1884 to become the Superintendent of Mines, Pearce established his estate along the Bow River. The property covered about 80 hectares, and in 1889, he built a grand sandstone home called the “Bow Bend Shack.” The home stood on the land for decades before it was eventually demolished in 1957.

Around 1929, Pearce donated a portion of his land to the City of Calgary, which would later become Pearce Estate Park.

Today, the park is a popular destination for outdoor recreation and is home to the Sam Livingston Fish Hatchery, Bow Habitat Visitor Centre, and access to Harvie Passage. The park is currently being “re-naturalized” to bring the wetlands closer to their natural conditions.

Calgary is full of parks with interesting histories, like one that used to be home to a massive hospital, and another that replaced an entire neighbourhood.
