This Calgary ice rink is hosting public skating sessions all summer

29 July 20263 Mins Read

Public skating at Calgary’s Olympic Oval is back for the summer, and it might be one of the best ways to cool off during this heat wave. It’s been seriously hot lately, and while there’s nothing better than enjoying the sunshine, sometimes we all need a little break from the heat.

Instead of hiding inside with the fan on full blast, you can grab your skates and spend some time on the ice at one of Calgary’s most iconic sports facilities.

So, if a chilly escape sounds like exactly what you need right now, here’s what you need to know before heading to the Olympic Oval.

Olympic Oval public skating details

Located at the University of Calgary, the Olympic Oval is one of the city’s most recognizable sports facilities and is recognized around the world for its speed skating history. According to the University of Calgary, the rink earned its nickname as the “Fastest Ice in the World” and has also hosted countless athletes, including Olympians who have trained on its famous track.

But don’t worry, you don’t have to be a professional skater to enjoy the ice! Public skating sessions at the Olympic Oval are running every Wednesday and Saturday throughout the remainder of July and all of August. The sessions are open to all ages, so you can bring along friends, family, or anyone else who’s ready for a break from the heat.

Public skate pricing and timing

The public skate sessions are from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays and from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturdays. If you don’t have a pair of skates at home to bring with you, rentals will be available on-site, so you can still join without needing to buy your own gear.

If you do plan on bringing your own gear, don’t forget to pack a helmet, as they are required for all public skating sessions.

So, when the heat starts feeling a little too intense, head over to the Olympic Oval and pretend it’s winter for a little while.

When: Every Wednesday and Saturday
Time: Wednesdays, 6:30 to 7 p.m.; Saturdays, noon to 3 p.m.
Where: 288 Collegiate Blvd. NW, Calgary, Alta.
Cost: $7.25 for adults, and $5 for youth and seniors
