The Musical Cancels UK Tour After Poor Ticket Sales —

7 August 20262 Mins Read

by Chris Peterson

The planned UK tour of Trainspotting: The Musical has been canceled after the production failed to sell enough tickets.

The new musical, written by Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh and featuring music and lyrics by Welsh and Stephen McGuinness, is currently playing its world-premiere engagement at London’s Theatre Royal Haymarket. That run will continue through September 5, but the production will not move forward with its previously announced national tour.

The tour had been scheduled to begin at the Edinburgh Playhouse on October 19. It would have visited Sheffield, Manchester, Birmingham, Cardiff, Brighton, Glasgow and several other cities before concluding with another Edinburgh engagement in March 2027.

In a statement, the production blamed the cancellation on the current economic climate and “lower than expected ticket sales.” Patrons who purchased tickets will be contacted by their original point of purchase with information about receiving full refunds.

The extent of the sales problem may have been significant. Performer and resident director Keiran Brown reportedly wrote on Facebook that the opening Edinburgh engagement had reached only 19% of its sales capacity. Cast members have also confirmed that they are no longer contracted for the planned tour dates.

The cancellation is another reminder of how financially dangerous touring theatre has become. Moving a large musical across the country requires substantial advance sales.

Still, it is worth asking how such an extensive tour was announced before producers had a clearer understanding of the audience for this particular adaptation.

Trainspotting remains an enormously recognizable title. Welsh’s 1993 novel and Danny Boyle’s 1996 film became cultural landmarks. But as we know, familiarity does not automatically translate into demand for a musical adaptation.

The London production still has several weeks to find its audience. But the cancellation of the tour suggests that name recognition alone was not enough to convince audiences across the UK to choose Trainspotting: The Musical.
