Turn BFCM Hype Into More Direct Revenue

26 August 20268 Mins Read

In Brief: Travel Tuesday hotel marketing strategies are being promoted as a way for hotels to capitalize on Black Friday and Cyber Monday momentum, aiming to increase direct bookings and maximize revenue during the high-traffic holiday shopping period.

Black Friday. Cyber Monday. And then… Travel Tuesday?

If that last one is new to you, you are probably not alone. But for independent hotels, it may be the most interesting part of the entire Black Friday Cyber Monday shopping period.

Travel Tuesday is the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, following Black Friday and Cyber Monday, when travel brands promote limited-time deals to travelers already primed to shop. Instead of competing with televisions, toys, and laptops, hotels get a natural opportunity to make travel the thing people buy next.

More importantly, hotels do not need to treat Travel Tuesday as an isolated 24-hour sale.

The bigger opportunity is to use the attention surrounding Black Friday and Cyber Monday to build anticipation, capture demand, and then give travelers a final reason to book directly on Travel Tuesday.

That turns one promotional day into a multi-day hotel marketing strategy designed to increase revenue.

What Is Travel Tuesday and Why Should Hotels Care?

Travel Tuesday falls immediately after Cyber Monday. It has emerged as a travel-focused extension of the broader holiday shopping period, with airlines, hotels, cruise lines, and other travel companies promoting deals specifically to consumers interested in booking trips.

Consumers spend days hearing the same message: this is the time to find a deal.

By Travel Tuesday, hotels can capitalize on that buying mindset with something much more exciting than another piece of electronics: a vacation.

And unlike an OTA promotion, a hotel’s own Travel Tuesday campaign can be designed specifically to generate direct bookings.

How Can Hotels Use BFCM Hype to Increase Revenue?

The first mistake would be waiting until Travel Tuesday to start talking about the offer.

Instead, think of Black Friday through Travel Tuesday as one campaign with several stages.

Black Friday: Get the Deal in Front of Travelers

Black Friday is about visibility. Your hotel is entering a noisy shopping environment, so the message needs to be simple. Travelers should immediately understand what they can get, when they can stay, and why they should care.

For example:

Save 25% on select spring stays when you book by Travel Tuesday.

That is considerably stronger than “Our Black Friday Sale Is Here!”

The first version explains the benefit, introduces urgency, and tells the traveler what the offer is actually for.

Black Friday is also the time to activate a hotel’s digital marketing, including email, paid social, paid search, website messaging, and retargeting audiences together. The objective is not necessarily to get every visitor to book immediately. It is to make sure your hotel enters their consideration set.

Cyber Monday: Turn Interest Into Urgency

By Cyber Monday, your message should evolve. Someone who visited the offer page on Friday but did not book should not necessarily see the exact same advertisement three days later.

They already know about the sale. Now give them a reason to act. Messaging can shift toward the deadline: “One Day Left,” “Your Spring Escape Is Still Waiting,” or “Travel Tuesday Is Tomorrow.”

This is where thoughtful PPC, paid social, email segmentation, and retargeting become important. The campaign should respond to what travelers have already done instead of repeatedly shouting the same offer at everyone.

Travel Tuesday: Make Travel the Main Event

Travel Tuesday is your closing argument. At this point, the message can become explicitly travel-focused:

“You’ve shopped for everyone else. Now book something for yourself.”

Travel Tuesday gives independent hotels a natural reason to send another email and refresh advertising creative without making the campaign feel repetitive. The offer does not necessarily need to get better. In fact, continually increasing the discount teaches consumers to wait.

Instead, the urgency gets stronger because the booking window is closing.

What Kind of Travel Tuesday Deal Should a Hotel Offer?

The best offer is not automatically the biggest discount. Before deciding what to promote, ask a more useful question:

Where does the hotel actually need revenue?

A blanket 30% discount can generate a great-looking booking report while reducing revenue on dates that would have sold at full price. Instead, connect the promotion to your forecast.

Imagine an independent beach resort that typically struggles with midweek occupancy in April but has little trouble selling Saturdays in June. Putting both periods on sale makes little sense.

A smarter Travel Tuesday promotion could offer 20% off Sunday-through-Thursday spring stays. The campaign generates demand, but it directs that demand toward inventory the hotel actually needs to sell.

How Can Travel Tuesday Generate More Direct Bookings?

Price is only one reason to book directly. Hotels can make the direct offer more valuable with benefits that are difficult for an OTA to replicate, such as complimentary breakfast, parking, room upgrades, resort credits, late checkout, or other property-specific perks.

The hotel’s website then needs to explain that value immediately.

A traveler clicking a Travel Tuesday ad should not land on the homepage and start hunting for the promotion. Give the campaign a dedicated, optimized landing page with clear dates, restrictions, direct-booking benefits, and a simple path into the booking engine.

This is where SEO, paid media, website conversion, and revenue management collide. Driving more visitors to a website is useful only if the booking experience can convert them.

When Should Hotels Start Planning a Travel Tuesday Campaign?

Ideally, six to eight weeks before Thanksgiving. That may sound excessive for a sale lasting a few days. It is not.

A well-executed campaign can require offer modeling, rate configuration, email segmentation, creative development, landing pages, paid media audiences, conversion tracking, booking-engine testing, and revenue reporting.

A simple timeline looks like this:

And yes, this is where the strategy becomes more complicated than making a “25% OFF” graphic in Canva.

The hotel’s revenue strategy, website, booking engine, analytics, email platform, search campaigns, social campaigns, and creative all need to tell the same story.

How Do You Know if Travel Tuesday Actually Increased Revenue?

Do not simply look at the number of bookings made during the promotion. A hotel could sell $100,000 in rooms during BFCM and still have a mediocre campaign if most of those rooms would have sold anyway.

Instead, look at what the campaign changed.

Did it improve occupancy on need dates? Did guests stay longer? Did the hotel generate more direct bookings? What happened to ADR? How much did each reservation cost to acquire? Were new customers added to the hotel’s first-party database?

Those answers require looking beyond the ROAS number displayed inside an advertising platform. Attribution gets complicated quickly. A traveler might open an email on Black Friday, click an Instagram ad on Sunday, search the hotel’s name on Cyber Monday, and finally book on Travel Tuesday.

Which channel deserves the revenue? That is why effective performance marketing requires solid analytics and an understanding of the entire booking journey, not just the last click.

Travel Tuesday Hotel Marketing: What Should You Do First?

If your hotel wants to capitalize on Travel Tuesday, prioritize these steps:

  1. Find the revenue opportunity. Identify the dates, room types, or stay patterns that actually need demand.
  2. Create the offer around that opportunity. Avoid discounting inventory you expect to sell anyway.
  3. Start on Black Friday. Use BFCM attention to introduce the promotion rather than waiting until Tuesday.
  4. Build urgency through Cyber Monday. Retarget interested travelers and evolve the message.
  5. Make Travel Tuesday the finale. Give travelers a clear deadline and compelling reason to book direct.
  6. Measure profitability, not just bookings. Compare revenue, ADR, acquisition cost, stay dates, and direct-booking performance.
