Edmonton’s biggest indoor farmers market brings in over 140 vendors every weekend

1 September 20263 Mins Read

The Old Strathcona Farmers Market is Edmonton’s biggest, original indoor farmers market, and it brings more than 140 local vendors together under one roof every weekend.

Since 1983, this farmers market has operated with a fine assortment of vendors and artisan crafters. It’s one of the city’s best markets where you can eat, shop, and enjoy the great buskers.

With an extensive interview process for each vendor, the market ensures each item up for grabs is genuinely local and lovingly made.

What to know about the Old Strathcona Farmers Market

What is the Old Strathcona Farmers Market?

According to the market, it began in 1983 as a seasonal outdoor market in a parking lot with only 40 vendors, and has since grown exponentially.

In 1990, it moved indoors to the historic and iconic brick building that once operated as a bus barn and became Edmonton’s first year-round farmers market. Now, it offers over 140 vendors each weekend.

When and where is the Old Strathcona Farmers Market?

The farmers market happens every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and every Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

You’ll find the market in Old Strathcona, near Whyte Avenue, taking place in a gorgeous red brick warehouse.

What can I find at the market?

You’ll be able to find:

  • Baked goods
  • Beverages
  • Exotic foods
  • Fashion and jewelry
  • Meats and animal products
  • Home decor
  • Pet items
  • Produce
  • Sweet treats

What’s the best way to find vendors?

The market has an interactive map on its website, where you can virtually browse aisles or search by product and vendor name. The map shows vendors for the upcoming weekend, while the directory shows all vendors period.

What’s the best way to get there?

Thanks to the City of Edmonton, there are bike maps as well as the ETS trip planner to help you get around the market this season. For those biking, there is a free bike valet service on-site offered seasonally.

The Edmonton Streetcar also has a stop just north of the market, making it a viable option for travelling as well.

Is there parking?

For those driving, the farmers market has its own parking lot just east of the venue, which costs $2.50 an hour, up to an $8 maximum. There is also free residential parking in the surrounding areas, or paid street parking on 102nd Street or 85th Avenue.

Are pets permitted in the market?

According to the market, no pets are allowed in the building except for trained service animals with valid credentials.

How much is admission?

This local farmers market is entirely free to enter, but you’ll be sure to purchase your own individual goods and eats.
