From ‘Heartland’ to ‘The Last of Us’: This small Alberta town is a major filming destination

High River is known for being a go-to filming destination for movies and television, bringing its small-town Alberta charm to the big screen on multiple occasions.

Located in southern Alberta, High River offers scenic landscapes, historic streets, and endless opportunities to see spots that may have crossed your screen. With shows like My Life with the Walter Boys and The Last of Us using these local streets as filming locations, your visit to this town will give you a closer look at the exciting community that helped make these productions possible.

High River: ‘A hub for major films and television’

According to High River, the town has been appearing in films from all the way back to the 1920s. These productions continue to bring energy to the community to this day and help support local businesses economically. The Town actually notes that productions directly contributed over $1 million to High River’s local economy in 2025.

You’re actually able to take a self-guided tour, created by the Town, to recognizable show locations with the stories behind them.

Since 2007, however, this town has been best recognized for being in Heartland on CBC (now in its 20th season), appearing as the fictional community of Hudson. If you want to get a closer look at the show, you can check out props and costumes at the Museum of the Highwood.
