The Legendary Eurail Pass Is Officially Going Away—Here’s What’s Replacing It

If you’ve ever thumbed through a worn guidebook on a night train out of Paris, struck up a conversation with strangers in a dining car somewhere in the Alps, or spent a college summer clutching an all-access train ticket, you know the magic of the Eurail Pass.

For more than 60 years, that single document served as the ultimate passport for non-European travelers exploring the continent’s historic tracks.

Now, one of the most recognized names in travel history is reaching the end of the line. The parent company behind the network has officially retired the Eurail name globally, unifying all operations under its sister moniker: Interrail.

Starting immediately, U.S. travelers looking to book multi-country train adventures will no longer find a Eurail Pass for sale. Instead, everyone worldwide will ride the rails under one unified name: the Interrail Pass.

Why the Iconic Name Is Changing

Since its creation in 1959, the company divided its passes based on where you lived. European residents purchased an Interrail Pass, while overseas travelers—including Americans, Canadians, and Australians—bought a Eurail Pass.

That geographic split is now history. By retiring the Eurail brand and bringing all global riders together under Interrail, the company aims to build one shared international travel community across its network of 33 countries and more than 35 participating railway and ferry operators.

Along with the name change, the company is rolling out The Interrail Effect, a global platform centered around the transformative, slow-travel nature of crossing borders by rail rather than speeding through crowded airport terminals.

“For years, we’ve asked people where they want to go. The more interesting question is who they’ll become when they return,” said Özlem Birkalan, Chief Brand and Commercial Officer at Interrail. “The Interrail Effect isn’t something we invented. It’s something travelers have described to us for decades. Now, we’re building our brand not only around where people travel, but around what traveling this way does to them.”

What This Means for Your Next Trip to Europe

If you’re already planning an overseas journey or holding tickets, don’t worry—the tracks aren’t changing, and you won’t lose your access.

Here’s what travelers need to know right now:

• Your Existing Pass Is Still Valid: If you purchased a Eurail Pass before September 10, 2026, it remains 100% active under its original terms and conditions. You can board your trains without any issues.
• New Bookings Move to Interrail: From here on out, new purchases made by Americans and international visitors will be issued as Interrail Passes directly through Interrail.com. The legacy Eurail website, social media handles, and digital URLs will automatically redirect there.
• The Perks Remain the Same: This is strictly a brand consolidation, not a product downgrade. The Interrail Pass offers the exact same flexibility, country coverage, fare classes, and freedom that defined the classic Eurail experience for generations.

While the name on the ticket may be different, the romance of the rails remains untouched: stepping onto a train with an open schedule, watching the countryside roll past your window, and discovering that the journey across Europe is still the best destination of all.
