This free festival is bringing over 100 arts and culture events to Vancouver this fall

Now in its 23rd year, the Downtown Eastside Heart of the City Festival brings together some of the brightest local artists for an unforgettable series of 100+ events, nearly all of which are completely free to attend.

What is the Heart of the City Festival?

The celebrated festival takes place over 12 days across 30+ local venues, spotlighting incredible works of art and organizations that are making a real difference in their communities. Visitors can enjoy a variety of live music, dance, theatre and visual art performances, film screenings, poetry readings, exhibits, neighbourhood walking tours, and so much more.

What is this year’s theme?

The theme of this year’s festival is belonging, specifically as “something we create together,” according to organizers. It’s all about sharing stories, laughter, grief, and joy, and ultimately serves as a reminder that everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.

For over two decades, the festival has worked with Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside to carry forward the community’s ancestral stories, collective memories, traditions, lived experiences, and artistic practices.

The result is an incredible lineup of accessible events of all kinds, where locals and visitors alike can gather and find a sense of belonging.

What are some festival highlights in 2026?

There’s so much to see and do at this year’s festival. A handful of highlights include the Electric Company Theatre’s new play, Epigone, a modern myth about complicated grief, stigmas of addiction, and our responsibilities to the dead. The production runs for two weeks at the Russian Hall, and it’s completely free to secure your ticket.

Another neat project to look out for is Reimagining Justice by The Circle Project, a series of three video installations created by the Vancouver-based association of artists who were formerly incarcerated. Produced in collaboration with Adad Hannah and Jin-me Yoon, the videos will be presented at Gallery Gachet and KW Atrium Studio independently (on Oct. 31), coming together for a screening of all three at Carnegie Community Centre on Nov. 7.

Likewise, Life at OPS is a collection of videos by Nathaniel Canuel aimed at raising awareness about the importance of the Overdose Prevention Society (OPS).

Another free event to check out is the debut of the Summer City Street Mural Celebration, which spotlights Richard Tetrault’s dynamic collage mural. The piece will officially join the City of Vancouver’s Public Art collection, ensuring its continued public presence on the walls of Carnegie Community Centre.

To mark the occasion, Tetrault will take festival-goers around Vancouver’s Eastside to present his collaborative and solo murals, ranging from the 1998 Walls of Change project to other murals on themes of displacement, striving, and empowerment on Friday, Oct. 30.
