A Caribbean carnival is taking over Calgary with music, performances, and island traditions

24 July 20263 Mins Read

Calgary is about to get a little taste of the islands this summer, as Carifest returns to the city for its 45th year. The three-day event will transform the city into a colourful celebration filled with performances, lively events, and a chance to experience the traditions that make Caribbean heritage so unique.

Let’s take a further look at what to expect when Carifest returns to the city this August.

What you’ll find at Carifest

Carifest has been bringing Caribbean culture to Calgary for decades. According to festival organizers, the roots of the celebration go back to the 1980s, when a group of Calgarians formed the CanCarib Association to share their heritage and help educate the wider community about the culture.

The group wanted to showcase that Caribbean culture goes beyond just food and music, creating a space where people could learn all about the stories and traditions that make each island unique.

Today, Carifest has grown into a multi-day celebration that features everything from dance workshops and live performances to a colourful parade and carnival-style festivities.

This year’s festival lineup is packed with events as Carifest celebrates its 45th year. On Friday, Aug. 14, the celebration will begin with the after-work kick-off party at Cowboys Park. The party will feature classic Caribbean music, plenty of dancing, and the perfect way to ease into the weekend before the bigger festivities begin.

The biggest day of the festival is Saturday, Aug. 15, with the return of the Carifest Parade. The parade will take over Stephen Avenue, bringing the streets to life with colourful costumes, lively performances, and the sounds of steel pan music.

After the parade, the festivities will continue at Cowboys Park with Carnival in the Park. From 12:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., visitors can enjoy an afternoon of cultural showcases, authentic Caribbean food, and family-friendly activities.

The weekend will wrap up on Sunday, Aug. 16, with the Reggae Cool Down, an afternoon of live music that will feature internationally acclaimed reggae artist Caleb Hart alongside some of Calgary’s local talent.

Carifest timing and tickets

Carifest will run from Friday, Aug. 14, to Sunday, Aug. 16, with the majority of the weekend celebrations taking place at Cowboys Park.

The majority of the festival events are free to attend, including the parade and the Carnival in the Park. The only ticketed event is the Night Carnival on Friday evening, and tickets can be purchased through Showpass.

So if you’ve ever been curious about the stories, traditions, and celebrations behind Caribbean culture, Carifest is the perfect excuse to experience it for yourself.

Now all that’s left to do is grab your crew and get ready to dance!

When: Friday, Aug. 14, to Sunday, Aug. 16, 2026
Time: Time varies based on the event
Where: Cowboys Park – 1220 9th Ave. SW, Calgary, Alta.
Cost: Free
