Where has the King of the Monsters shown up in your life over the years?
Ever since coming to life on film back in 1954, Godzilla has been all over different forms of entertainment media — whether it’s TV shows, comic books, or action figures perhaps enjoyed during your upbringing.
Millennials and similar generations might recall seeing Godzilla (1998) in theaters, the American reboot starring Matthew Broderick. Even Austin Powers in Goldmember made a comedic reference to the giant monster.
Thirty years later came Godzilla Minus One, which won an Academy Award in 2024 for Best Achievement in Visual Effects. Then came news of a sequel, which finally premiered to the world on Saturday, September 26 at this year’s iteration of the New York Film Festival.
Godzilla Minus Zero already holds an impressive 93% average critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which offers the following synopsis:
“War reduced Japan to zero, and Godzilla plunged it into minus. Two years have passed since then, and the country has faced agonizing struggles to achieve recovery and finally reclaim its daily life. Just as humanity managed to cling to a hard-won peace, a new threat strikes, crushing hope in an instant. There is no third time. Everything ends here.”
The follow-up to Godzilla Minus One is also making headlines because it’s rated R — marking a first in the film franchise’s 72-year history, per Variety. Returning director Takashi Yamazaki addressed the historic MPAA rating at NYFF on Saturday.
“Logically, as a studio — and even as a director — you want as many people from the general public to be able to see your film,” Yamazaki, 62, told Variety. “So, an R-rating might seem like a barrier to entry, and conversations about, ‘Hey, could we have not gotten this down to PG-13?’ of course are going to happen. In spite of that, though, there were certain scenes that, for me as a director, were so essential to the film. Censoring it or cutting it was just not an option for me.”
