A Very Impressive Port That Supports Mouse Controls

12 September 20264 Mins Read

While Diablo 5 is still on the far-off horizon, a Nintendo Switch 2 port of Diablo 4 is arriving much more imminently. Titled the Diablo 4: Age of Hatred Collection, it bundles the base game with its expansions Vessel of Hatred and Lord of Hatred for Nintendo’s latest system.

Polygon went hands-on with the Switch 2 Diablo 4 port at BlizzCon 2026, and confirmed with Blizzard that the port will support Joy-Con 2 mouse controls at launch.

Mouse controls are one of the more unique but underutilized features of the Switch 2. If you place the flat end of a Joy-Con 2 controller down on a surface, you can use mouse cursor-like functionality in games like Fortnite, Metroid Prime 4 Beyond, and Sid Meier’s Civilization 7. Considering the PC roots of Diablo as a franchise, mouse control support gives the Switch 2 port a unique feature that you can’t find on the other console versions of the game.

Sadly, the Joy-Con 2 controllers at my BlizzCon demo kiosk for Diablo 4: Age of Hatred Collection were locked into the system in handheld mode, so I was not able to try out the mouse controls for myself. Still, I got to try the port in both docked and handheld mode and came away impressed with what I played, albeit with a few caveats.

The BlizzCon build of Diablo 4’s Switch 2 port was for a quest from the upcoming Season of Hell’s Legacy, which begins the same day this port launches. Titled “A Journey Through The Past,” this quest tasked me with exploring a dungeon within the Furnace of Hate to fight villains from the series’ past. That includes the likes of Mephisto, The Lord of Hatred and Belial, The Lord of Lies. During later encounters, eagle-eyed fans will also notice Easter egg enemy names referring to Diablo 2 bosses like Achmel or Colenzo.

Season of Hell’s Legacy is meant to serve as a celebration of Diablo’s 30th anniversary, and the “A Journey Through The Past” quest really embodied that. As the same quest was playable on PC at BlizzCon, my demo also affirmed that there is no need to worry about this port being content-comprised at all. That said, it doesn’t appear to offer Nintendo-themed bonuses like Diablo 3‘s Switch port did at release.

Nintendo Switch 2 is technologically inferior to the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X, so this version of Diablo 4 doesn’t look or run quite as crisply as the other console versions of the game in docked mode. While I can’t confirm the exact frame rate and resolution of my demo, it was a step down visually from the high-end playable PC version playable right next to it. The loading times were still surprisingly fast, though.

Thankfully, this slight graphical downgrade isn’t completely detrimental to the experience. It did not noticeably lag, even during the busiest boss fights, and its controls stayed responsive and did not eat inputs. If you’re picking up this port to mostly play in docked mode, be aware you’re getting an experience more on par with the PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game. The real reason to pick this port of Diablo 4 up is the ability to play it in handheld mode.

Running through the same dungeon portably, I was impressed by how uncompromised this mode of play felt. Even when things got very hectic on the screen, its resolution and frame rate felt stable in handheld mode. The one drawback to handheld mode is that in-game text is quite small, so this will not be the best version to play if you really care about reading every line of dialogue, item description, and character state in detail yourself.

For Diablo 4 button-mashers like myself, though, this isn’t really a problem, and is more tailor-made for handheld play than the Steam Deck Verified PC port. I’m certainly looking forward to playing more and testing out the mouse controls when Diablo 4: Age of Hatred Collection launches on Nintendo Switch 2 on Sept. 14 alongside the start of the Season of Hell’s Legacy.
