Agoda has released search data showing that interest in solo travel among Japanese travelers increased by 11% year on year for international travel and by 17% for domestic travel.
Agoda reported that its accommodation search data showed a year-on-year increase in interest in solo travel among Japanese travelers, with an 11% rise in international travel and a 17% rise in domestic travel. The data compared search activity by Japanese solo travelers from January 1 to December 31, 2025, with the same period in the previous year.
For international travel, the cities with the highest search interest from Japanese solo travelers were Seoul, Bangkok, Taipei, Hong Kong, and Honolulu. All of these cities are noted for convenient access from Japan, safety, and developed transportation infrastructure.
Seoul was a particularly popular destination for solo travelers, especially for trips focused on beauty and wellness. The ability to enjoy a range of experiences, such as dining, shopping, and sightseeing during short stays, was also a factor in the appeal of these destinations.
In domestic travel, the data showed a 17% year-on-year increase in solo travel searches, surpassing the growth rate for international travel. The cities with the highest search volumes among Japanese solo travelers were Tokyo, Osaka, Fukuoka, Sapporo, and Yokohama.
Several regional cities saw notable year-on-year growth in solo travel demand: Chiba saw a 67% increase, Takamatsu a 62% increase, Okayama a 46% increase, Izumisano a 41% increase, and Saitama a 40% increase. Many of these cities offer convenient access to major airports or have an airport, which may contribute to their selection as destinations for both domestic and international solo travel.
Takamatsu and Okayama were especially popular among regional cities, with a strong balance of convenience and tourism resources. There is a growing interest in regional cities that allow travelers to avoid crowds and pursue flexible itineraries, particularly those centered around airports.
