America’s Best New Museum Just Opened in North Texas

If Arlington, Texas, is already on your radar for a game, a concert or this summer’s World Cup matches, there’s a newer attraction nearby that many visitors still don’t realize exists. The National Medal of Honor Museum, which opened less than a year ago near AT&T Way, has just been named the Best New Museum in America by USA TODAY’s 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards.

The museum spans 31,000 square feet and focuses on the stories of Medal of Honor recipients across U.S. history—more than 3,500 individuals, from the Civil War to the present day. Rather than being a general military museum, it zeroes in on specific moments of bravery, using personal artifacts, letters, photographs and multimedia exhibits to explain what each recipient did and why it mattered.

Designed by the late architect Rafael Viñoly, the structure is elevated above the ground and supported by five large concrete columns, each representing a branch of the U.S. Armed Forces. Inside, exhibits mix traditional displays with interactive elements, including digital storytelling and optional virtual experiences that let guests explore historical moments in more depth.

One gallery that often stops visitors in their tracks centers on World War II, including the moment that symbolically marked the defeat of Nazi Germany. Instead of framing it as a military victory alone, the museum focuses on the people behind the decisions—what it meant to be there, what was at stake and the acts of bravery in those final moments that carried enormous personal cost.

A Vietnam-era gallery follows the story of a combat medic who ran toward danger again and again to shield wounded soldiers—even after being injured himself. Letters, personal artifacts and multimedia elements help connect visitors to who he was beyond the battlefield, offering context that makes the sacrifice feel personal rather than abstract.

Beyond the 31,000 square feet of interior galleries, the museum sits on a five-acre campus designed for pause and reflection. The building itself appears to float above a “field of honor,” an architectural choice by Viñoly that gives the grounds an open, almost weightless feel. Visitors can sit near Mark Holtz Lake, walk through tree-lined paths in the Arboretum, or gather in Old Glory Plaza beneath one of the largest American flags in the country.

There are also deliberately quiet spaces—lawns, shaded groves and a mezzanine area—meant for sitting with what you’ve just seen inside. After dark, the Light Cannon sends beams into the sky from the museum’s central oculus, a visual marker that’s visible well beyond the campus and serves as a reminder that the stories told here don’t end when the doors close.

The museum stood out among a wide range of finalists—including places like the Edelman Fossil Park & Museum and the Museum of BBQ—suggesting it’s resonating with visitors well beyond Texas. Past winners of the Best New Museum title include the National Comedy Center and Gettysburg’s Beyond the Battle Museum.

Tickets start at $30, and the museum is located at 1861 AT&T Way, close to major stadiums and entertainment venues. With Arlington set to welcome a global audience for World Cup events this summer, the National Medal of Honor Museum adds a meaningful stop for anyone visiting or already in town.
