Apple’s Neuromancer trailer looks as good as the 42-year-old masterpiece

25 July 20262 Mins Read

One of the most important science fiction works of the 20th century is getting a TV adaptation for the first time in 42 years: William Gibson’s Neuromancer, the novel widely recognized as the birthing cry of the cyberpunk subgenre, is getting a show on Apple TV. Created by Graham Roland and J. D. Dillard, the show was first announced in 2024, and now we finally have a trailer and a 2027 release date.

Despite being a seminal work of imaginative fiction, Gibson’s 1984 novel surprisingly never got a film or TV adaptation. There have been several attempts to turn the book into a movie, but none came to fruition, which is why so many expectations are running on Apple TV’s show. Judging from the trailer, Apple spent the dollars to do the series right. We get vast futurustic cityscapes, retrofuturistic cybernetic hookups, ladies with needle fingers, and a few shots of space to send our minds reeling.

Neuromancer is set in a near-future dystopia that brings to life some of the most disturbing speculations about artificial intelligence, cyberspace, consumer capitalism, and the World Wide Web in eerily prophetic ways. The world imagined by Gibson is bleak, with the opening line of the novel (referenced in the teaser trailer for the show) having become iconic: “The sky above the port was the color of television, tuned to a dead channel.”

Gibson’s heroes are hackers, criminals, and people living at the fringes of a society where capitalism and technology have created an inscrutable oppressive machine. The cast of the show includes Callum Turner as hacker protagonist Case, Briana Middleton as cybernetically augmented mercenary Molly, Joseph Lee as the dangerous bodyguard Hideo, and Mark Strong as Armitage.

Neuromancer, along with other works of the cyberpunk subgenre, is responsible for fostering a wave of counter-culture that swept through literature and speculative media in the 1980s. Its influence on science fiction cannot be overstated, but it remains a work created more than four decades ago, no matter how well it predicted future developments in our society. The Apple TV show has the hard task of modernizing a work that was already modern to begin with, but judging on the trailer, they’re on the right path.

Neuromancer premieres on Apple TV on Jan. 22, 2027.
