Back-to-Back F1 Races in Malaysia and Singapore Drive Surge in International Arrivals

F1 Races Lead to Higher International Arrivals

Amadeus Travel Intelligence data shows a marked increase in international air arrivals to Malaysia and Singapore during the Formula 1 Grand Prix events in October. The Malaysia Grand Prix is scheduled for 2-4 October at Sepang International Circuit, followed by the Singapore Grand Prix from 9-11 October at Marina Bay. The data covers international arrivals to Kuala Lumpur and Singapore from 28 September to 11 October, compared to the same period in the previous year.

Cross-Border Travel Between Malaysia and Singapore Rises

Travel between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore has increased significantly in the period between the two cities. Air arrivals from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore rose by 74% year-on-year from 5 October to 11 October. This suggests the proximity of the two events is driving more cross-border movement as fans attend both races.

Long-Haul Travelers Boost Arrivals

Malaysia’s Grand Prix is attracting visitors from a wide range of international markets. The top 10 origin markets for air arrivals into Malaysia during the race week (28 September to 4 October) are Australia, India, the United Kingdom, Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, Thailand, Indonesia, and Japan. The United Kingdom is the fastest-growing source market for arrivals into Kuala Lumpur, with a 49% year-on-year increase. Australia follows with a 40% increase, and Singapore with 38%.

For Singapore, international air arrivals between 5 and 11 October show strong growth from long-haul markets. Arrivals from the United States are up 88% year-on-year, the United Kingdom up 73%, New Zealand up 54%, and Taiwan up 43%. These figures suggest that the back-to-back race schedule is drawing fans from distant markets.

Shifts in Length of Stay

Travel data indicates changes in visitor behavior regarding length of stay. In Kuala Lumpur, short stays of one to five nights increased by 17% year-on-year during the race period, while medium (six to 13 nights) and long stays (14 nights or more) both decreased by 8%. In contrast, Singapore experienced a 49% year-on-year increase in medium-length stays of six to 13 nights, suggesting that visitors are extending their trips beyond the race weekend.

Solo and Couple Travelers Drive Growth

Analysis of traveler profiles shows that solo and couple travelers are contributing significantly to the rise in air arrivals. In Malaysia, solo arrivals into Kuala Lumpur rose 37% year-on-year, while arrivals among couples rose 11%. In Singapore, solo traveler arrivals rose 44% and couple arrivals 24%. This trend reflects a broader pattern of travelers incorporating sporting events into both individual and shared travel experiences.

Event-Driven Travel Trends

According to Amadeus, 15% of leisure travelers globally are influenced by events when selecting destinations. The surge in arrivals during the F1 races in Malaysia and Singapore aligns with this trend, as major sporting events increasingly shape travel planning and destination choices.

Implications for the Travel Industry

The increase in international and cross-border arrivals during the back-to-back F1 races presents opportunities for the travel and hospitality sectors. Airlines, hotels, and related businesses may benefit from longer stays and multi-city itineraries as fans combine attendance at both races with extended travel in the region.
