Badlands, Marty Supreme, and everything new to stream this weekend

13 February 20265 Mins Read

A young Yautja must prove himself worthy of his clan by defeating an unkillable monster in Predator: Badlands, which connects the Predator and Alien movies without requiring knowledge of either. You can hunt it down on Hulu. Fans of Sinners should check out Ryan Prows’ Night Patrol, which also uses extremely bloody horror to explore white supremacy.

For a campier spin on horror, rent Johannes Roberts’ chimp slasher film Primate. You can also chase down Timothée Chalamet on VOD, where he plays a 1950s table tennis hustler (and potential vampire slayer) in Marty Supreme. The tense film received nine Oscar nominations.

Here’s a rundown of the most notable new releases on streaming and VOD, including the biggest, best, and most popular new movies you can watch at home right now.

New on Apple TV

Eternity

  • Genre: Fantasy romantic comedy
  • Run time: 1h 54m
  • Director: David Freyne
  • Cast: Miles Teller, Elizabeth Olsen, Callum Turner

After dying in her 90s, Joan (WandaVision star Elizabeth Olsen) is given a week to choose to spend eternity with her husband of 65 years, Larry (Miles Teller), or with her first husband, Luke (Callum Turner), who died in the Korean War. She also has to pick a theme for her afterlife in this tongue-in-cheek film inspired by weird science.

New on Hulu

Predator: Badlands

  • Genre: Science fiction action
  • Run time: 1h 47m
  • Director: Dan Trachtenberg
  • Cast: Elle Fanning and Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi

The young Yautja Dek (Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi) is sentenced to death for being too weak, and his only chance to prove himself involves traveling to the “death planet” Genna to kill its apex predator. Teaming up with a badly damaged android (Elle Fanning), Dek learns how to navigate the hostile terrain and claim his birthright.

From our review:

Badlands feels less like a Predator movie and more like part of the Avatar franchise, another property Disney got in the Fox merger. It deals with the same themes of questioning what you will sacrifice for your family — biological or found — and environmental exploitation, richly rewarding characters who appreciate the beauty of nature and learn to use it in a respectful fashion. Just like in Avatar, none of these themes are especially deep, and the villains are cartoonishly evil. But while Avatar delves further into its exploration of grief and loss, Badlands quickly moves on to more whimsical fare. There’s a whole fight scene involving Thia’s disembodied legs that adds a distinctly cheesy beat to what’s otherwise the film’s best action sequence.

Primitive War

  • Genre: Science fiction
  • Run time: 2h 15m
  • Director: Luke Sparke
  • Cast: Ryan Kwanten, Tricia Helfer, Nick Wechsler

An elite recon unit sent into the jungles of Vietnam in 1968 to find out what happened to a Green Beret platoon discovers a valley populated by dinosaurs. To survive the mission, they’ll have to contend with prehistoric predators and Soviet forces conducting secret experiments in the area.

New on Shudder

Honey Bunch

  • Genre: Thriller
  • Run time: 1h 54m
  • Director: Madeleine Sims-Fewer and Dusty Mancinelli
  • Cast: Grace Glowicki, Ben Petrie, Jason Isaacs

After Diana (Grace Glowicki) wakes up from a coma with fragmented memories, her husband, Homer (Ben Petrie), takes her to an experimental trauma center in the wilderness to recover. But as her memories begin to return, Diana starts to question the strange treatments and her supposedly happy marriage.

New to rent

Marty Supreme

  • Genre: Sports drama
  • Run time: 2h 30m
  • Director: Josh Safdie
  • Cast: Timothée Chalamet, Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A’zion

Shoe salesman and competitive table tennis player Marty Mauser (Timothée Chalamet) dreams of winning the British Open. He goes to extreme lengths to pursue his goal, stealing money for travel and hustling everyone he meets. Director Josh Safdie drives the film with the same tense momentum he brought to Uncut Gems.

Night Patrol

  • Genre: Horror thriller
  • Run time: 1h 44m
  • Director: Ryan Prows
  • Cast: Jermaine Fowler, Justin Long, RJ Cyler

LAPD officer Ethan Hawkins (Justin Long) takes part in a brutal initiation ritual to join Night Patrol, an elite task force he believes has answers about his father’s death. Ethan’s tasked with killing a gang member who witnessed the group’s crimes, a hunt that has terrible consequences for his partner Xavier Carr (Jermaine Fowler) and the housing projects where Xavier grew up.

Primate

  • Genre: Horror
  • Run time: 1h 29m
  • Director: Johannes Roberts
  • Cast: Johnny Sequoyah, Jessica Alexander, Victoria Wyant

Basically Cujo with a chimpanzee instead of a dog, the campy slasher Primate follows Lucy (Johnny Sequoyah), a college student who returns home to Hawaii on vacation with some friends. Their trip turns terrifying when Lucy’s family pet, a rescued chimpanzee, contracts rabies and goes on a murderous rampage.

Sweetness

  • Genre: Thriller
  • Run time: 1h 33m
  • Director: Emma Higgins
  • Cast: Kate Hallett, Herman Tømmeraas, Aya Furukawa

High school student Rylee (Kate Hallett) can’t wait to meet her idol, rock star Payton Adler (Herman Tømmeraas). But when she sees Payton doing drugs backstage at a concert, she conspires to save him from himself by holding him captive until he gets sober. Rylee is convinced she’s acting out of love to help someone whose music changed her life.
