Capcom Officially Just Let Down Millions of Gamers

This year’s Tokyo Game Show has come and gone, and with it another sterling opportunity for an Ace Attorney 7 announcement. But fans got a flurry of hope earlier this week — followed by yet another wave of disappointment. On Wednesday, Capcom announced a VR port of the fifth game in the series. Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies VR will launch for Meta VR Glasses, Meta Quest 3/3S, Quest Pro, and Quest2 sometime in 2027.

Ace Attorney 7 is nowhere in sight

Don’t get me wrong — Ace Attorney will probably be pretty great in VR. The controls aren’t too complicated or twitchy, and investigations would only be enhanced with greater immersion. That said, the last new entry in the Ace Attorney series was 2017’s delightful The Great Ace Attorney 2: Resolve. Set in London during the 19th century, both two Great Ace Attorney games were eventually released outside Japan in 2021. Though there have been plenty of Ace Attorney ports to various platforms since 2017, it’s been nearly a decade since fans have gotten new cases to pore over. And they’ve made their dismay clear on social media after this week’s announcement.

“Quickest excited to disappointed I’ve experienced in my life,” wrote one X user in response to the news. “Immediately jumped out of my seat and then actually read the whole tweet,” said another forlorn fan on X.

But don’t put that clown makeup away just yet. There’s still a chance an Ace Attorney announcement could happen before 2026 comes to a close. The Game Awards is coming up on Dec. 10, so we might see a trailer there. News that the series has hit some major sales milestones only adds fuel to the fire. On Sept. 20, Capcom shared that 2019’s bundle Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy has sold more than 5 million copies. According to data on Capcom’s investor relations website, the franchise as a whole has sold more than 15 million copies. Even Wendy Oldbag would have to admit that’s very impressive.

That same day, Capcom posted a new illustration on X to mark the upcoming 25th anniversary of the series on Oct. 12. “Is there perhaps anything else you would like to share to commemorate this massive milestone?” a hopeful fan asked. That anniversary is less than three weeks away, so we don’t have to wait long to find out.
