David Lund’s “The Prosperous Hotelier

11 August 20265 Mins Read

In Brief: New book invites hotel leaders to master the numbers, advance their careers and help professionalize the hospitality industry

Limited-time pre-order offer gives readers both volumes for $49 USD, including shipping and handling

The Prosperous Hotelier — Two, the forthcoming companion to David Lund’s The Prosperous Hotelier, will be published in early 2027.

To mark the announcement, publisher Maurice Bassett is offering readers both trade-paperback volumes for a total of $49 USD, including shipping and handling, for a limited time.

More than a book announcement, the release is an invitation to the hospitality industry.

Hospitality offers an open door few other businesses can match: people can enter without a degree, connections or capital and build lifelong careers. Fulfilling that promise, however, requires experienced leaders to teach the next generation how the business truly works.

“Making hospitality more professional isn’t head office’s job or the brand’s job,” said Lund. “It’s yours and mine—one leader at a time, one set of numbers at a time.”

From One Book to Two

When Lund finished The Prosperous Hotelier, he believed he had put everything he knew about hospitality financial leadership—more than 30 years of experience—between two covers.

But the book did not stay finished.

As it reached readers, clients and workshop participants, new questions began coming back. They were not about what the book contained, but what it did not:

How can someone build a meaningful career in hospitality? How can department heads become genuinely engaged with the numbers? What is a cap rate, and why do hotel owners talk about it? How can financial misconduct be recognized and prevented?

Lund answered those questions while continuing the weekly writing practice he has maintained for more than a decade. One article became another, old hotel stories found their way onto the page, and the collection gradually became a second book.

The Prosperous Hotelier — Two is written for hotel leaders who did not receive formal financial training but want to understand the business at a deeper level.

The first book explains the fundamentals, including flow-through, profit-and-loss statements, forecasting and how to read the story told by the numbers. The new volume explores where that knowledge can lead.

It covers four major areas:

  • Career development: Practical guidance for building a lasting hospitality career, including lessons rarely taught in hotel school.

  • Financial leadership: Strategies for creating an engaged leadership team in which department heads understand the numbers and see a future beyond their next shift.

  • Hotel investment and ownership: Clear explanations of cap rates, valuations, proformas and breakeven—the language hotel owners use and senior leaders must understand.

  • Financial controls: Twenty chapters about preventing losses, protecting hotel assets and recognizing vulnerabilities before money goes missing.

“When leaders understand how the money works, the numbers stop being a secret handshake between the general manager and the controller,” said Lund. “That isn’t merely an accounting exercise. It’s how we develop and keep our best people.”

The new book also includes more stories from Lund’s three decades in hotels, capturing both successes and mistakes. In his experience, the stumbles often provide the most valuable lessons.

Together, the two books take readers from understanding financial results to using that knowledge as a path toward leadership, credibility and opportunity.

“The numbers are the way inside the business,” said Lund. “This book is the next door.”
