Diablo 4 secret cow level found after 3 years and 2 expansions

Diablo 4‘s secret cow level has finally been found after a long hunt that has lasted since Diablo 4‘s original release in June 2023 — and that had some doubting that the level even existed.

This is, of course, just how Blizzard wanted it. The developer has made a bit out of denying the existence of secret cow levels and then putting them in Diablo games ever since the late 1990s. To begin with, in the original Diablo, the cow level really didn’t exist; it was an urban myth among fans that became a running joke with the developers. Eventually, Blizzard went and put a secret level called Moo Moo Farm in Diablo 2, wherein the player was assaulted by a horde, sorry, herd, of murderous cows carrying axes.

It turns out that Blizzard was playing a long game with Diablo 4‘s cow level, much as it was with the plot, which has played out in a three-part arc over the original release and expansions Vessel of Hatred and Lord of Hatred.

The unlock path for Diablo 4‘s secret cow level is incredibly complex and spans all three chapters of the game. It involves slaughtering 666 cows to complete a very long quest in the original game, then lots of item hunting and more cow murder in Vessel of Hatred, then hunting for rare relics in Lord of Hatred and combining them in the newly added Horadric Cube. This leads to a secret cow island where there are series of cryptic clues — including a ring of cows arranged like hours on a clock, and portals that appear linked to days of the week — as well as apparent red herrings, like the ability to fish up cows. The clues have now finally been solved.

Players are a little underwhelmed with the level itself, which is a simple enough scrum with some cows followed by a battle with the Cow King boss. The loot the boss drops is functionally useless, but very funny: a crown which bestows a variety of absurd bonuses depending on the day of the week that it’s worn. (My favorite: “Saturday: +1.3% chance to ignore Crowd Control if you have already been Crowd Controlled for over 10 weeks in Helltide.”) It seems to be a self-aware reference to the “damage on Tuesdays” meme that spread among the Diablo 4 community in the game’s early days, due to the arcane and complex bonuses offered by the game’s itemization at launch.

Disappointed players have pointed out that Diablo 2 and 3‘s cow levels were great for actually useful loot drops. But do those drops have “+10.26% Moobility damage while mooving”? They do not.
