Dominican Republic Leverages International Sporting Event to Accelerate Tourism Investment, Luxury Growth and U.S. Expansion

In Brief: More Than RD$5 Billion In Public Investment, New Luxury Hospitality Projects And Expanded Air Connectivity Position The Caribbean’s Most-Visited Destination To Attract High-Value Travelers From Texas

As the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games officially open in Santo Domingo today, the Dominican Republic is using the international spotlight to showcase a broader economic strategy centered on tourism investment, luxury hospitality development and increased visitation from the United States.

With more than RD$5 billion invested in venues, infrastructure and tourism improvements, the Games represent one of the country’s most significant economic and tourism initiatives of the decade. More than 6,000 athletes from 37 nations and territories are expected to compete in over 40 sporting disciplines, while an estimated 300,000 visitors are projected to travel to Santo Domingo during the event.

Rather than relying solely on new construction, organizers reduced overall costs by modernizing existing facilities—an approach that balanced fiscal responsibility with long-term infrastructure improvements designed to benefit residents and visitors well beyond the closing ceremonies.

“The Dominican Republic has the infrastructure, air connectivity, hotel accommodations and organizational capacity necessary to host world-class international sporting events,” said David Collado, Minister of Tourism of the Dominican Republic. “The Santo Domingo 2026 Games demonstrate our country’s continued evolution as a premier sports tourism destination where visitors experience exceptional competition while enjoying our culture, hospitality and natural beauty.”

The Games coincide with unprecedented private-sector investment in the country’s hospitality industry. The opening of The St. Regis Cap Cana and the forthcoming Four Seasons Resort and Residences at Tropicalia reflect growing international confidence in the Dominican Republic’s luxury tourism market as global hotel brands continue expanding their Caribbean portfolios.

At the same time, the Dominican Republic continues strengthening its position within one of its most important international markets—the United States. The Americas generate more than 7.4 million visitors annually, and the Ministry of Tourism has expanded its U.S. outreach through strategic marketing initiatives, airline partnerships and trade missions while maintaining convenient nonstop air service from Houston and other major U.S. gateways.

For Texas travelers, the Dominican Republic offers a unique combination of accessibility, luxury accommodations, cultural experiences and outdoor recreation within just a few hours of home. As one of the nation’s strongest outbound leisure travel markets, Texas represents an important opportunity in the country’s strategy to attract higher-value international visitors.

“Santo Domingo 2026 will bring together the region’s finest athletes while reinforcing the Dominican Republic’s reputation as a trusted destination for world-class international events,” said José Monegro, President of the Organizing Committee for the XXV Central American and Caribbean Games. “Beyond the competition, the Games will showcase the Dominican Republic’s ability to host large-scale events that generate meaningful economic impact and lasting tourism growth.”

The Dominican Republic’s investment in the XXV Central American and Caribbean Games reflects a broader national vision—leveraging international events to stimulate economic development, attract private investment, strengthen tourism infrastructure and further establish the country as one of the Caribbean’s premier destinations for leisure travel, meetings, sporting events and luxury hospitality.

ABOUT SANTO DOMINGO

Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic and the oldest European-founded city in the Americas, blends more than five centuries of history with a vibrant, modern economy. Its UNESCO World Heritage-designated Colonial City, thriving culinary scene, cultural institutions, waterfront districts and expanding hospitality sector make it one of the Caribbean’s most dynamic urban destinations. Supported by excellent air connectivity and world-class tourism infrastructure, Santo Domingo serves as both the country’s cultural heart and a gateway to destinations throughout the Dominican Republic.

ABOUT THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC MINISTRY OF TOURISM

The Dominican Republic Ministry of Tourism is the official organization responsible for planning, regulating and promoting tourism throughout the Dominican Republic. Through strategic investment, sustainable tourism initiatives and a global network of more than 20 international offices, the Ministry works to expand international visitation, strengthen air connectivity and position the Dominican Republic as one of the world’s leading leisure and luxury travel destinations.
