Doctor Who Reboot Shows First Signs of Life in New BBC Update

17 September 20262 Mins Read

Like the sci-fi show’s titular Time Lord, Doctor Who is starting to regenerate. Following the series’ effective cancellation earlier this year, the BBC is now searching for a new production team for a reboot.

The BBC published official documentation today announcing that it has begun a “tendering” process in which it will take pitches from production companies to pick up the franchise. The timeline is moving pretty quickly, as the deadline for submissions is Oct. 1. That’s only two weeks away, so if you happen to have a lot of money and run a production company, you better get on it. After submissions close, the BBC plans to conduct interviews with potential candidates by the end of January next year, with a final decision expected to be made in March. If all goes according to plan, the newest iteration of Doctor Who will premiere in 2028 or 2029.

The BBC does give some guidelines for potential applicants. It wants the series to remain “relevant, surprising, brave, and inspiring for both long-standing fans and new audiences.” Visually, the show should feel “cinematic, distinctive, and ambitious.” All of which sounds like a lot of buzzwords with little actual meaning. There is some wiggle room for pitches, as the BBC notes that it is open to a story-of-the-week or serialized structure and the number of episodes per season is not set. Most importantly, pitches should remember that Doctor Who will always be about “distinctively British storytelling.”

Why was Doctor Who canceled?

While Doctor Who wasn’t canceled in traditional terms, the most recent iteration of the show imploded in pretty dramatic fashion. It began in late 2025 when Disney dropped its partnership with the show after two seasons. Earlier this year, showrunner Russell T. Davies also exited the series and plans for a Christmas special were scrapped.

That left the show on a pretty bonkers cliffhanger. The final episode, “The Reality War,” ends with the Fifteenth Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) regenerating into Rose Tyler (Billie Piper), a returning character from the show’s past. This obviously raised the question whether Rose was actually the next Doctor, something that hasn’t been officially answered.
