Edinburgh Fringe 2026 Festival Takes Center Stage As Travel Demand Soars :: Hospitality Trends

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the world’s largest arts festival, transforms Scotland’s capital each August into a global stage, welcoming thousands of performers and millions of visitors for three weeks of theatre, comedy, music, dance and cultural events.

New Amadeus Travel Intelligence data reveals that demand for travel to the 2026 Edinburgh Fringe is growing double-digit, with international visitors expected to drive a significant increase in air arrivals while domestic travelers continue to show interest in attending the festival

Air arrivals expected to climb 16% as international demand grows

Estimated international arrivals to Edinburgh for the month of August are up 16% year-on-year, reflecting the festival’s enduring global appeal. Leisure travelers account for 98% of all estimated arrivals further underscoring the Fringe as a major driver of summer travel to the region ¹.

The leading international origin markets by share are:

• Italy (15%)
• United States (15%)
• Germany (11%)
• Spain (9%)
• France (9%)

While Europe and North America continue to lead visitor arrivals, other markets are showing momentum. Among the fastest-growing emerging origin markets are China (+70%) and Saudi Arabia (+57%), with Austria (+45%), Romania (+45%) and Poland (+42%) rounding out the top five.

This highlights the increasingly international reach of the Edinburgh Fringe, with long-haul and emerging markets contributing to the festival’s continued growth.

Air search activity for Edinburgh has also increased by 5% year-on-year, indicating sustained interest in attending the festival.

Domestic searches made within the United Kingdom account for 58% of all flight searches yet represents around 27% of estimated air arrivals. This suggests that while domestic demand remains strong, many UK visitors could be opting for alternative modes of transport such as rail, coach or car rather than flying into Edinburgh.

Hotel demand peaks in mid-August

Across the full festival month, with hotel bookings as of 19 July 2026, Demand360 data shows that hotels are already averaging 70.7% occupancy, a figure that is broadly consistent with 2025 and an average daily room rate (ADR) of $467 ².

The busiest period of the festival is expected to be the week commencing 9 August, when Edinburgh hotel occupancy reaches 76.7%, and ADR climbs to $504.

Visitors are taking their time to enjoy the various shows and events at the festival, with 58% of trips forecasted to last between 6 and 13 nights. Around one-third of visitors are expected to stay for fewer than six nights.

Travelers are now looking beyond Edinburgh

While hotel occupancy in Edinburgh has remained relatively stable year-on-year, average room rates have continued to rise.

Some travelers now appear to be considering nearby cities as alternative bases for attending the festival. Among Edinburgh’s neighboring destinations, Dundee has recorded the strongest year-on-year growth in hotel occupancy, increasing from around 40% to approximately 52%, outperforming Glasgow and Newcastle.

On average, staying in Glasgow can reduce accommodation costs by around 57% compared with Edinburgh. Staying in Dundee offers the most significant saving of approximately 66%, equating to an average of $321 saved per night.

As accommodation prices continue to climb in Scotland’s capital, nearby cities are becoming increasingly attractive options for budget-conscious festival goers without sacrificing access to the Edinburgh Fringe.
