Elvis Presley Made History With a Rock and Roll Milestone 40 Years Ago

Forty years ago, Elvis Presley made history as one of the inaugural inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The year was 1986, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was a brand-new establishment celebrating music legends like Presley. It recognized the groundbreaking artists who had shaped the sound and spirit of rock and roll for generations.

The Visit Graceland Instagram page honored this accomplishment. They captioned a photo of Presley, “On January 23, 1986, Elvis Presley was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as part of the very first class of honorees. Nearly a decade after his passing, the world came together to recognize the King of Rock ’n’ Roll’s lasting impact on music and culture.”

Presley was in esteemed company among the 1986 inaugural inductees, whose careers spanned much of rock and roll’s formative years. His contemporaries included the artists who helped shape the genre from its earliest days.

The Class of 1986 included Presley, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, The Everly Brothers, Fats Domino, James Brown, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, Ray Charles, and Sam Cooke. The website says the honor celebrates “the iconic artists who have created music whose originality, impact, and influence have changed the course of rock & roll.”

Sean and Julian Lennon, sons of legendary Beatle John Lennon, had the honor of inducting Presley during the first-ever ceremony. The induction symbolized a bridge between the pioneers of rock and roll and the artists who followed in their footsteps.

Julian said during the induction, “I’d just like to say first of all, I’m very pleased and very proud and very nervous to be here tonight. I wanted to say my father was a big fan of Elvis’s.”

He continued, “Elvis was loved all over the world. We are all influenced by him. A lot of people around the world get a lot of pleasure from listening to him and love him greatly.”

“I have something to read that my father once said about Elvis,” Julian added. He read John’s statement, “Elvis was the thing. Whatever people say, he was it. I was not competing against Elvis. Rock happened to be the medium I was born into.”

“It was the one that sold. Those people who picked up paintbrushes like Van Gogh probably wanted to be Renoir or whoever went before him. I wanted to be Elvis,” Lennon’s remarks concluded.
