Here’s How You Can Help With the Relief Effort, Canada Reviews

11 August 20262 Mins Read

Just weeks after Venezuela was struck by a series of powerful earthquakes which killed hundreds, a 7.4 magnitude tremor was recorded in western Colombia on Monday, August 10.

The rescue effort is ongoing, so while the hunt for survivors continues in the affected cities, here is a list of places to which you can donate to aid the relief effort.

Where did the earthquake hit in Colombia?

The earthquake struck at 7.34am local time on Monday, August 10, and registered as a magnitude 7.4 according to US and Colombian geological surveys.

The epicentre of the tremor was located in the western department of Chocó, with major cities like Cali and Pereira severely affected. Along with damage to thousands of buildings and thousands of injuries, the death toll sits at 175 people at the time of writing.

How can I help earthquake victims in Colombia?

Below is a list of more organisations to which you can donate to help with the relief effort after the earthquakes in Colombia:

  • UNICEF is collecting donations to help affected children.
  • World Central Kitchen provides fresh meals to disaster-struck areas including regions affected by humanitarian, climate or natural crises.
  • All Hands & Hearts has reportedly been in Colombia since Monday, helping to supply emergency rescue teams with equipment.
  • The House Project provides shelter to displaced people, and it has a page dedicated to earthquake relief in Colombia.
  • The Colombian Red Cross is supporting the rescue effort in Colombia.
  • Global Giving is another non-profit collecting donations for long-term recovery.
  • The World Food Programme is working with Colombian authorities to limit the impact of food insecurity and provide affected people with meals.

What’s the latest advice from the UK Government?

Head to the FDCO’s official website for all the latest travel advice. It reads: ‘Colombia suffered an earthquake affecting large parts of the country. Expect potential disruption to travel and airport closures. Wider infrastructure and roads may be affected.’

‘If you’re in Colombia, follow the advice of local authorities, stay away from damaged buildings and plan ahead.’

‘The following airports are currently closed: La Nubia Airport (Manizales), Matecaña International Airport (Pereira), El Edén International Airport (Armenia), El Caraño Airport (Quibdó), Santa Ana Airport (Cartago), Gerardo Tobar López Airport (Buenaventura).’
