‘High School Musical’ Cast Celebrates 20-Year Anniversary: From Wildcats to Icons

Premiering on January 20, 2006, High School Musicalquickly became a cultural phenomenon and a defining Disney Channel movie.

Two decades later, the film’s catchy songs, unforgettable characters, and feel-good story continue to resonate with fans old and new. To celebrate the anniversary, the cast reflected on the movie’s lasting impact.

PEOPLE Magazine spoke to several of High School Musical‘s cast members, including Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, Corbin Bleu, and Ashley Tisdale, as they reflected on the film’s milestone. They shared their unique experiences after the Disney Channel film turned them into cultural icons.

Efron admitted, “We were having fun, learning as we went, and honestly just enjoying every moment together. I never could’ve imagined it would still mean so much to people 20 years later, or that a whole new generation would connect with it, and I’m grateful for that.”

Bleu claimed that the “whirlwind” of the film’s success was tough to navigate as a teenager. “Being launched into that kind of whirlwind before your frontal lobe is even fully formed is fraught with pitfalls to navigate.” However, he said that working on the film “forged lifelong relationships amongst the cast and crew.”

Tisdale told PEOPLE, “Whenever you put something out into the world, of course you hope people enjoy it. But I couldn’t have imagined the longevity HSM has had.”

The film’s iconic choreography is what has stuck most with Hudgens. She joked that the dance from “We’re All in This Together” is “ingrained into my DNA.”

Some other future Disney Channel stars who got their start as guest stars in the films include actors and entertainers Miley Cyrus, Max Ehrich, Shane Harper, Tanya Chisholm, Drew Seeley, and Matt Prokop, and future DWTS stars Allison Holker and Britt Stewart.

To celebrate the original film’s 20th anniversary, Disney+ will feature a HSM streaming channel featuring all three films in the series, High School Musical, High School Musical 2, and High School Musical 3: Senior Year, as well as Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure and all seasons of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series through March 4, 2026.
