Is It Safe To Travel to Indonesia? Latest Travel Advice After Volcanic Eruption, Canada Reviews

Jakarta, Indonesia’s 500-year-old capital, greets around 60 million visitors a year for their travels throughout the country. However, on Saturday, the volcano Anak Krakatau started erupting 150km from the city. Luckily, no casualties have been reported, but the volcanic ash across the region has left 270,000 passengers stranded across Indonesia and grounded 2,000 flights.

Airports have been closed for multiple days while the ash spreads across flight routes. Here is everything you need to know if you have travel plans.

Is it safe to travel to Indonesia and are airports open?

Currently, it is safe to travel to Indonesia with protections in place. Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta Airport plans to reopen at 6pm on Monday, and one in South Sumatra has already reopened. There’s no advice against traveling to Indonesia once airports reopen. 

The UK government’s FCDO page has advice for protecting yourself against low air quality caused by volcanic ash: ‘Ash plumes and pollutants from volcanoes can affect air quality and have an impact on health. A fitted face mask may provide some protection from airborne particles. To reduce exposure to hazardous gases, stay inside and close doors and windows. Masks will be available in Indonesia – or buy your own before you travel.’

What is the latest government travel advice?

The UK government’s FCDO advice page for Indonesia has been updated in light of the eruption. It reads: ‘Soekarno Hatta Airport and Halim Airport in Jakarta were temporarily closed due to the volcanic ash clouds from Mount Anak Krakatau on 5 September. Both airports have reopened, but there are continued flight disruptions and many flights are cancelled or delayed.’

‘If you are due to travel, check with your airline or travel provider for up to date information on your flight status.’

Can I get a refund if I cancel my trip?

Travel to Indonesia has not been explicitly advised against, so you’ll have to consult your travel provider directly to see what can be done about cancelling or rescheduling your trip. Companies aren’t obligated to provide you with a refund unless advice from the government changes.
