Istanbul Overtakes Heathrow As Europe’s Busiest Airport, Canada Reviews

12 August 20262 Mins Read

We all know the havoc of airport rush hour. The security queues, the gate sprints, the desperate hunt for a seat near a plug socket. Well, one European airport has been seeing all of this more than anywhere else. Istanbul Airport has overtaken London Heathrow as Europe’s busiest, according to figures released by trade body Airports Council International, with 8.15 million passengers passing through Istanbul in July compared to Heathrow’s 7.86 million, a gap of almost 300,000 travellers in a single month.

Heathrow has held the title of Europe’s busiest airport for the most part of 30 years, dominating from 1996 right up until 2019, before losing the top spot in 2020 amid pandemic travel restrictions. It clawed its way back in 2023 and has held on ever since – until now.

This July, Heathrow’s passenger numbers were down 1.5 percent compared to July last year, driven largely by a 20.2 percent collapse on Middle East routes as the ongoing Iran-US conflict continues to disrupt travel patterns. Istanbul, meanwhile, saw a 2.3 percent boost over the same one-month period.

Heathrow isn’t going down quietly, though. In a statement, the airport said ‘the case for expansion has never been clearer,’ reviving its long-running push for a third runway that would take annual capacity from just under 85 million passengers to a whopping 150 million. Heathrow CEO Thomas Woldbye said expanding the airport would help ‘ensure the UK remains home to Europe’s leading hub’.

Whether that actually happens is another matter entirely, as former Chancellor Rachel Reeves had hoped for a third runway by 2035, but new Prime Minister Andy Burnham has previously argued the plans would divert investment ‘away from the North and traps it in London’.

Istanbul also shows no signs of slowing down. The airport is set to open a fourth runway later this year, cementing its position as one of the most significant hubs bridging Europe and Asia.

Curious how the rest of Europe’s airports stack up? Here’s the full ranking of the world’s busiest airports in 2026.

Plus: Italy has launched a huge new hiking trail crossing six of its regions.
