Travel Sector Growth in Europe

A report released by Amadeus in collaboration with UN Tourism, titled “Travel Insights 2026: Focus on Europe,” indicates that between May 2025 and April 2026, European passenger traffic increased by 2.3% year-over-year. Hotel occupancy rose by 2%, and average daily rates (ADR) increased by 7%. The data shows that travelers aged 46 to 65 are the primary drivers of demand, with growing interest in destinations across northern, central, and eastern Europe.

International Arrivals and Regional Trends

According to the World Tourism Barometer by UN Tourism, international tourist arrivals in Europe grew by 4% in the first quarter of 2026, following a 5% increase in 2025. Southern Mediterranean Europe and Northern Europe each recorded a 4% rise in arrivals in the first quarter of 2026. Central Eastern Europe saw a 6% increase, consolidating its recovery, while Western Europe experienced a 2% rise.

Destination Shifts and Origin Markets

Booking data highlights a shift toward destinations offering unique experiences and seasonal balance. Czechia and Iceland recorded the fastest growth among top European destinations, with 18% and 11% year-on-year increases in bookings, respectively. This reflects increased interest in city breaks and nature-focused travel.

Japanese travelers led the growth among origin markets, with a 62% rise in searches for European destinations and a 19% increase in bookings. Booked traffic from Japan rose by 28% in Central and Eastern Europe, 14% in Southern and Mediterranean Europe, 10% in Western Europe, and 8% in Northern Europe. Denmark followed Japan in bookings growth, but at a lower rate.

Traveler Demographics and Hospitality Performance

Travelers aged 46 to 65 now represent about 30% of all demand across Europe, making them the largest traveler segment. This group shows a preference for local experiences, cultural activities, and wellbeing-focused travel.

The region’s hospitality sector reflected this trend, with the ADR holding at approximately $215 over the past year and peaking at $249 in June 2025. France recorded the highest ADR among major markets, reaching $441 in June and $391 in July. Hotel occupancy rates remained at or above 73% from May through October 2025, peaking at around 80% in September.

Booking Patterns and Forward Outlook

Nearly half (48%) of bookings were made more than a month in advance, supporting early marketing and pricing strategies. On-the-books occupancy for September 2026 is currently at 25%, compared to 22% at the same point last year, indicating sustained traveler commitment for the upcoming peak season.

Diversification of Demand and Emerging Destinations

The report notes increased interest in Central and Eastern European destinations, with Uzbekistan and Tajikistan leading in search growth at 64% each. Established destinations also saw strong search growth, including Switzerland (36%), Sweden (36%), Denmark (34%), Ireland (33%), Belgium (32%), and Norway (31%). This trend suggests travelers are seeking new destinations beyond traditional tourism hubs.

Data Sources and Methodology

The findings are based on data from Amadeus Destination Gateway, which combines historical and forward-looking hotel, air, and traveler sociodemographic data. The tool provides insights into air searches, hotel bookings, traveler trends, source markets, visitor profiles, and length of stay. The full report is available from Amadeus Hospitality.
