The airport experience is undergoing a massive shift, and the latest proof is a $100 million redevelopment project sweeping through Terminal 5. Led by JetBlue, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and Fraport USA, the terminal is getting a top-to-bottom transformation to bring more than 40 new shops, restaurants, and park-inspired communal hubs into the concourse.
But the real headline for travelers is the food. Instead of rolling out standard airport chains, the terminal has quietly built an absolute goldmine of legendary, authentic New York City culinary institutions.

Inside JetBlue’s Terminal 5 New Food and Dining Lineup
If you are flying out of T5 this summer, here are the heavy-hitting local brands you can officially hit right before takeoff:
- The Halal Guys: What started as a single, legendary street cart drawing block-long lines in Midtown Manhattan has officially made its way past airport security. You can now grab their famous, high-velocity halal chicken and gyro platters, complete with pita bread and that iconic, fiercely guarded secret white sauce, right before you board.
- Nom Wah: In a massive win for cultural preservation, Manhattan’s Chinatown is getting a stunning, 3,500-square-foot outpost in the terminal. Originally opened in 1920, Nom Wah is celebrated as New York City’s oldest continuously operating dim sum restaurant. The airport location is beautifully styled to feel like a vintage 1920s parlor, serving up their famous handmade dumplings and classic comfort plates.
- Eataly: The global Italian food mecca has officially unveiled a grand, 3,800-square-foot footprint inside the terminal. The venue acts as a full-service sit-down restaurant, an upscale wine bar, and a quick grab-and-go marketplace stocked with authentic Italian goods. (To celebrate the launch, they even partnered with the Metropolitan Opera for live pop-up performances of Puccini and West Side Story right in the terminal).
“At Terminal 5, we are creating more than an airport experience. We are creating a place that reflects the spirit of New York,” said Jose Cuevas, vice president of Fraport New York. “The refresh is transforming the terminal, offering exceptional dining and retail experiences, art, entertainment, and thoughtfully designed gathering spaces.”

The culinary star power doesn’t stop there. The newly updated lineup also features hot spots like Leon’s Bagels, the massive comfort food plates of Jacob’s Pickles, Melt Shop, and staple favorites like Shake Shack. And if you have a long delay, you can even kill time at Gameway, a brand-new immersive gaming and relaxation lounge built right into the concourse.
The massive layout update is hitting its final stretch, with the central concourse being redesigned to look and feel like one of Manhattan’s iconic public parks. Dubbed Central Node Park, the green indoor gathering space is tracking to be completely finished by September 2026 and will host live performances, pop-up markets, and interactive cultural events.
By trading generic airport concessions for real, neighborhood flavors, JFK is proving that the vacation doesn’t have to start when you land.
