Last Rites, The Substance, Vicious, and every movie on streaming this week

10 October 20257 Mins Read

It’s another big week for horror at home as The Conjuring: Last Rites, which had the biggest opening weekend in scary movie history, lands on VOD for the first time. You can also see Demi Moore’s Golden Globe Award-winning performance in Coralie Fargeat’s body horror film The Substance, which gets a new life on HBO Max. And Vicious, the horror mystery from The Strangers writer/director Bryan Bertino, brings its ritual magic to Paramount Plus.

Not looking for scares? The live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon flies onto Peacock this weekend, while the body swap comedy Freakier Friday wakes up on VOD.

Here’s a rundown of the most notable new releases on streaming and VOD, including the biggest, best, and most popular new movies you can watch at home right now.

New on Netflix

The Woman in Cabin 10

  • Genre: Psychological thriller
  • Run time: 1h 32m
  • Director: Simon Stone
  • Cast: Keira Knightley, Guy Pearce, Art Malik

The adaptation of Ruth Ware’s bestselling novel of the same name stars Keira Knightly as Laura Blacklock, a journalist reporting on a three-day charity event on a luxury yacht. When Laura sees a woman thrown overboard, she’s told that everyone on the boat is accounted for. As she keeps looking for answers, she finds herself in danger from someone who wants to silence her.

New on HBO Max

The Substance

  • Genre: Body horror
  • Run time: 2h 20m
  • Director: Coralie Fargeat
  • Cast: Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley, Dennis Quaid

Have you ever dreamed of a better version of yourself? Elisabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore) has. Once a celebrated Hollywood movie star turned aerobics TV show host, Elisabeth has been pushed out of her longtime job by her producer, Harvey (Dennis Quaid), who is eager to fill the slot with someone younger and hotter. Desperate to regain her sense of worth, she seizes the opportunity to use a black market drug that creates a younger version of herself named Sue (Margaret Qualley). When the symbiotic relationship between the pair begins to strain, the two genetic twins become trapped in a fight for supremacy.

New on Mubi

Lurker

  • Genre: Psychological thriller
  • Run time: 1h 41m
  • Director: Alex Russell
  • Cast: Théodore Pellerin, Archie Madekwe, Zack Fox

Matthew Morning (Théodore Pellerin) sees his life transformed when rising pop star Oliver (Archie Madekwe) likes the music Matthew plays at the clothing store where he works so much that he gives him a backstage pass to his upcoming show. Matthew joins Oliver’s entourage as a documentarian, but when the relationship sours, Matthew goes to extremes to get back in the inner circle.

New on Paramount Plus

Vicious

  • Genre: Horror
  • Run time: 1h 38m
  • Director: Bryan Bertino
  • Cast: Dakota Fanning, Kathryn Hunter, Mary McCormack

Polly (Dakota Fanning) is trapped in a nightmare when a woman (Kathryn Hunter of Andor) arrives at her home in the middle of the night and tells her she will die unless she places something she loves, something she needs, and something she hates in a box. As Polly tries to figure out what fits the bill, she’s hounded by threatening and disturbing phone calls.

New on Peacock

How to Train Your Dragon

  • Genre: Fantasy adventure
  • Run time: 2h 5m
  • Director: Dean DeBlois
  • Cast: Mason Thames, Nico Parker, Gabriel Howell

Golden Globe winner Dean DeBlois, who helmed the original How to Train Your Dragon films, wrote and directed the live-action version of the story about a teenage Viking befriending an injured dragon. The new version is longer to add more detail to the story and spend extra time showing Hiccup (Mason Thames) and the sleek catlike dragon Toothless enjoying flying together.

New to rent

Beast of War

  • Genre: Thriller
  • Run time: 1h 27m
  • Director: Kiah Roache-Turner
  • Cast: Mark Coles Smith, Joel Nankervis, Sam Delich

When their ship sinks while crossing the Timor Sea, a group of Australian World War II soldiers are left struggling to survive on a life raft. As they hope for rescue, try to avoid detection by enemy troops, and fight amongst themselves, they’re also stalked by a hungry great white shark.

Cloud

  • Genre: Psychological thriller
  • Run time: 2h 3m
  • Director: Kiyoshi Kurosawa
  • Cast: Masaki Suda, Kotone Furukawa, Daiken Okudaira

Yoshii (Masaki Suda) makes big profits as an online reseller of everything from collectibles to medical devices, but he becomes increasingly ruthless as his business expands, leaving behind a trail of upset customers and suppliers. The people he’s wronged band together to enact revenge, going to violent extremes as they stalk him.

The Conjuring: Last Rites

  • Genre: Supernatural horror
  • Run time: 2h 15m
  • Director: Michael Chaves
  • Cast: Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, Mia Tomlinson

Supposedly the last film in the long-running franchise about occult investigators Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga), The Conjuring: Last Rites sees the couple solving one last case of demonic possession. It’s a wholesome and comforting film for a horror flick, centering on the loving Warren family trying to help another large family deal with a haunted mirror.

From our review:

Even in its sillier moments, The Conjuring: Last Rites is effective enough as a scare machine. But the most efficient scare machines don’t tend to run 135 minutes. The creative team also seems unfortunately convinced they’re making a portrait of a family and a marriage. For those purposes, Ed and Lorraine are awfully static as characters, in spite of Wilson and Farmiga’s conviction as performers, and the amount of room the Smurls’ nonexistent characterization leaves them.

Freakier Friday

  • Genre: Fantasy comedy
  • Run time: 1h 51m
  • Director: Nisha Ganatra
  • Cast: Jamie Lee Curtis, Lindsay Lohan, Julia Butters

The sequel to 2003’s Freaky Friday features an even more complicated intergenerational body swap. Anna (Lindsay Lohan) is about to get married to Eric (Manny Jacinto), but winds up trading bodies with her daughter Harper (Julia Butters) while Anna’s mom (Jamie Lee Curtis) swaps with Eric’s daughter Lily (Sophia Hammons). Hijinks ensue as everyone has to learn about each other before the big day.

Him

  • Genre: Horror
  • Run time: 1h 36m
  • Director: Justin Tipping
  • Cast: Marlon Wayans, Tyriq Withers, Julia Fox

Cameron Cade (Tyriq Withers) is a rising football star until a head injury endangers his career. An offer from his childhood hero quarterback Isaiah White (Marlon Wayans) seems like it could offer a second chance, but as the training regiment becomes increasingly violent and disturbing, Cam has to decide what he’ll do to be a winner.

The Pickup

  • Genre: Heist comedy
  • Run time: 1h 34m
  • Director: Tim Story
  • Cast: Eddie Murphy, Pete Davidson, Eva Longoria

Russel (Eddie Murphy) and Travis (Pete Davidson) are mismatched partners driving an armored truck, with Russel focused on making his anniversary dinner date and finding a new career. Unfortunately, the woman Travis hooked up with over the weekend (Keke Palmer) turns out to be a criminal mastermind who blackmails the duo into helping her pull off a heist.

Solvent

  • Genre: Supernatural horror
  • Run time: 1h 34m
  • Director: Johannes Grenzfurthner
  • Cast: Jon Gries, Aleksandra Cwen, Johannes Grenzfurthner

A team of experts searching for lost Nazi documents in an Austrian farmhouse become obsessed with uncovering the building’s dark history. They discover an evil there that predates World War II and threatens to devour them and everything they love.

Traumatika

  • Genre: Horror
  • Run time: 1h 21m
  • Director: Pierre Tsigaridis
