The Lindsay Clancy trial has forced the public to confront one of the most difficult questions in criminal justice: Can someone be held accountable for an unimaginable crime while also being viewed as a victim of a devastating mental illness?
Clancy, a former labor and delivery nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital, is accused of killing her three young children, Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months, inside their Duxbury, Massachusetts, home on Jan. 24, 2023. Prosecutors allege that Clancy strangled the children with exercise bands while her husband, Patrick Clancy, was out running errands.
As Clancy’s defense argues she was experiencing postpartum psychosis and was not criminally responsible for her actions, supporters and critics have found themselves on opposite sides of a deeply emotional debate. Legal expert Margaret McLean tells Parade that the case stands out because it exists in a painful gray area where two realities are colliding.
“What makes the Clancy case stand out is that it forces the public to sit in an incredibly uncomfortable gray area. You can have overwhelming grief and demand justice for three innocent children, while simultaneously having profound empathy for a mother who was clearly drowning in a medical nightmare,” McLean says. “Those two feelings are tearing the public apart because, in this courtroom, both realities are entirely true.”

“People are divided: Clancy supporters point to her desperate efforts to seek help,” McLean continues. “They emphasize that she was prescribed 13 different powerful psychiatric medications in a span of just three months. To this camp, the trial is a referendum on how poorly society treats mothers struggling with postpartum illnesses. They argue her actions were the direct result of chemical overmedication and terrifying hallucinations.”
McLean points out that many people are focused on the victims, Clancy’s three young children.
“This perspective aligns with the prosecution’s opening statement framing: that regardless of mental illness, a heinous crime occurred. They focus heavily on the premeditated elements of the crimes,” McLean says.
Ultimately, McLean says the challenge for the jury will be separating the tragedy of what happened from the question at the heart of the trial: whether Clancy was legally responsible for her actions at the time of the killings.
