The Marvel Snap community is very concerned about the future of the digital card game after layoffs at developer Second Dinner. This prompted studio co-founder Ben Brode to respond and attempt to quell those fears by stating Second Dinner is still committed to Marvel Snap.
Marvel Snap originally launched in 2022 and attracted a very healthy community of players. Over time, that community has gotten smaller due to player fatigue and controversies regarding the game’s approach to monetization. In March, Second Dinner published a blog post stating that it would take the rest of 2026 to fix some persistent issues with Marvel Snap and better set the game up for future updates.
In the weeks since that post, game designer Glenn Jones left Second Dinner and the studio laid off several developers, including community manager Griffin Bennett. This X post from Marvel Snap content creator Regis Killbin sums up the situation and how the community feels about it:
This exodus of staff critical to Marvel Snap’s development is obviously cause for concern, with players on the game’s official Reddit and Discord pages clearly voicing their concerns. There’s an overarching worry that support for Marvel Snap is now going to wind down as it has felt like the game was suffering a slow death for some time.
Second Dinner originally stayed silent regarding the layoffs, but studio founder Ben Brode posted on Marvel Snap’s Discord on May 1. He explained why the layoffs happened and reassured players that Second Dinner will follow through on what was promised in its March blog post.
“We said goodbye to a few members of our team yesterday, including our awesome community manager,” Brode explained. “You know how much he cared about this community and we’re going to miss him. We know many of you will, too. These decisions were painful to make and say nothing about the quality of the people leaving. Across the board, they’re talented, wonderful people… For those of you concerned about Snap, we’re still here, still building, still committed to this game and to you. The roadmap we shared in March remains the same. This is us making hard decisions to make sure we can keep going, not a sign that we’re winding down. We’re here to support you.”
Historically, it’s never a great sign when a live service game developer has layoffs like this, even when the leadership say it’s not a bad thing. While this isn’t shaping up to be a Highguard-level fiasco, Brode’s statement doesn’t raise my confidence as an avid Marvel Snap player. While I’ll keep playing for now, these layoffs have definitely shaken my faith in the game’s future more than any other controversy Marvel Snap has faced over the past four years.
Marvel Snap is still available and receiving updates on Android, iOS, and PC. The game’s next season, Daredevil: Crimson Twilight, will begin on May 5.
