Meet Gears of War’s New Monster, the ‘Flying Testicle’

11 September 20264 Mins Read

For a prequel, Gears of War: E-Day is going to tread a lot of new ground. One of the game’s innovations is a monster known as the “flying testicle,” for which Polygon is able to exclusively reveal a new image as part of our 2026 Fall Preview.

Of course, the monster isn’t literally called the “flying testicle.” That’s just how Gears of War brand director Nicole Fawcette described it during an interview conducted at Gamescom 2026. (Cue an Xbox rep face-palming in the corner.) Its real name is the Spore Matron.

Developed by The Coalition and out Oct. 6 for Windows PC and Xbox Series X, Gears of War: E-Day is the first mainline series entry since 2019’s Gears 5. In Gears lore, the original run of games picks up several years into the titular war, which sees humanity locked in existential conflict against the relentless Locust horde. Gears of War: E-Day explores the exact moment when the Locust emerges from the planet’s hollow core — quite literally Emergence Day, or as the game’s comically muscle-bound heroes call it, “E-Day.”

The Locust are a motley crew of bloody, barbaric nightmare creatures. According to Fawcette, the Spore Matron is inspired by the Gas Barge (those giant floating skull monstrosities) from Gears of War 2. But where the Gas Barge was all bone, the Spore Matron is all flesh: a bulbous, 10-foot-wide balloon who spews spores that fly after you, only stopping when you shoot them out of the sky. Was Fawcette’s initial description accurate? Well, you can decide for yourself:

“It’s so twisted and hilarious, [in a way] that only Gears could do. And when you see it and you fight it, it’s just like, ‘What the fuck is that?’” Fawcette said. “It’s just kind of perfect, because there is this mix of a very serious, heavy, dark subject — you know, sometimes there’s very heavy themes — and then there’s these over the top situations, characters, creatures: the sci-fi element.”

Beyond the new Spore Matron, some older enemies are getting reimagined in E-Day. Art director Aryan Hanbeck pointed out that the Boomer (longtime Gears fodder, really tall, wields heavy weaponry) is somehow even more jacked.

“He’s a bit of a reimagining of the Boomer that has been in the games the whole time. He’s much bigger, he’s nine feet tall, and he’s just much girthier, and just kind of walks a little bit slower,” Hanbeck said. “He just looks like a tank.”

Speaking as someone who fought against a few Boomers for both Polygon’s Gears of War: E-Day campaign preview and Horde mode preview: confirmed.

Gears of War: E-Day is also evolving the Wretch, a Gollum-like creature you’d hear before you see. Fawcette noted how, in the original games, their infamous piercing screams would shatter nearby glass. But in E-Day, the screams actually have a “disorienting” effect on your character.

“They have an actual effect on the gameplay,” Fawcette said. “Which is, again, taking that idea of what we loved about the original game, and making your encounter with them so much more rich.”

From the few hours I’ve played, E-Day captures the Gears of War spirit — right down to the uniquely weighty shooting and cover systems — while pushing the series forward in new ways. It also colors in some narrative gaps that have persisted for years. The city setting of Kalona offers a never-seen-before look at a pre-apocalypse Gears of War world. The legendary chainsaw rifle gets its origin story. Protagonist Marcus Fenix reveals himself as a style icon on par with Leon S. Kennedy. And, yes, you fight some flying testicles.

“It’s awesome,” Fawcette said. “There’s lots of cool shit.”

Gears of War: E-Day will be released on Oct. 6 for Windows PC and Xbox Series X.
