Minor Hotels Announces Avani Wollongong Hotel for 2027

Minor Hotels plans to open the Avani Wollongong Hotel at 22 Kenny Street in Wollongong in 2027, following development approval from the City of Wollongong

Minor Hotels will introduce the Avani Hotels & Resorts brand to Wollongong with the planned opening of Avani Wollongong Hotel in 2027. The hotel is set to be located at 22 Kenny Street, near Wollongong’s central transport hub, central business district, and city beach. This will be the first new-build property for the Avani brand in New South Wales.

The hotel will be part of a mixed-use development by Blaq Property Group. The development is positioned to benefit from growth in Wollongong’s health precinct, central business district renewal, and the revitalisation of the nearby Port Kembla area. Minor Hotels has collaborated with Destination Wollongong to align the project with the region’s tourism strategy and support for major events.

The City of Wollongong granted development approval for the project in July 2024. Blaq Property Group has submitted a further application to increase the number of guest rooms from 107 to 140, which is currently under assessment.

The Avani Wollongong Hotel is planned to feature 107 rooms and suites, ranging in size from 24 to 41 square metres. The property will include a ground-floor restaurant, a bar, and a flexible event space. The restaurant is planned to serve locally inspired cuisine, and the bar is intended as a gathering space for guests and locals. The event space is designed to accommodate a range of functions.

The project is part of a broader initiative to increase hotel room supply in New South Wales. Destination Wollongong has referenced the New South Wales Government’s stated goal of delivering an additional 40,400 hotel rooms by 2035, with Wollongong positioned as a contributor to this target.

The Avani Wollongong Hotel represents Minor Hotels’ first Avani-branded property in New South Wales. The development is intended to meet the growth needs of hotels in Wollongong and the Illawarra region.
