Mushuko Tensei season 3 looks like its most devastating season yet

2 July 20263 Mins Read

Few modern anime have evolved as dramatically as Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation. What began as the story of a deeply flawed man getting a second chance in another world has steadily transformed into an expansive fantasy saga about consequences and growing up, without ever losing sight of the messy humanity at its core.

Mushoku Tensei season 2 marked a turning point for Rudeus Greyrat. After spending much of the first half emotionally adrift following Eris’ sudden departure, he eventually found purpose at the Ranoa University of Magic, reconnecting with childhood friend Sylphiette and building a life that, for the first time, felt genuinely stable.

But Mushoku Tensei has never been interested in letting its characters stay comfortable for long. The second cour broadened that stability into something more complicated. Rudeus reunited with his long-lost mother, Zenith, following a brutal labyrinth expedition that claimed the life of his father, Paul. At the same time, his growing family expanded again as Roxy officially entered his life alongside Sylphiette, cementing one of the series’ most divisive but defining relationships.

By the end of season 2, Rudeus had finally achieved something he’d spent two seasons chasing: a home, a family, and a future worth protecting. Naturally, that also means he has more to lose than ever before.

Marking the fifth anniversary of the series, season 3 picks up on that uneasy peace, adapting one of the most anticipated stretches of the light novels as old allies return, powerful new enemies emerge, and the consequences of Rudeus’ past choices begin catching up with him in ways that promise to reshape the series once again. The first two episodes of the new season, which aired early at Anime Expo, prove it’s headed in the right direction, with director Ryosuke Shibuya focusing on returning characters, like Eris and other friends from Rudy’s past, creating tensions on all sides.

Beat the heat with these new and returning stories

The first episode focuses on Eris’ journey with Ghislaine Dedoldia following the events of season 2, where the duo arrive at a snow-covered dojo in the northern lands of the Central Continent. The action is put on full display from the very start, with Eris showing off incredible swordsmanship before being put in her place by Sword God, Gal Farion, the blue-haired master of the dojo. It’s here where Eris will train to become the “Mad Sword King,” all while visions of her previous confrontation with Orsted continue to haunt her.

The music this season is absolutely incredible. Matched to its sleek animation, the soundtrack for season 3 only amplifies those growing tensions hiding just beneath the surface. Season composer Yoshiaki Fujisawa expertly balances those quiet, dialogue-heavy moments with the action-packed fierceness of Eris’ swordplay with a natural blend of flutes and strings.

While intense sword-fighting action is at the forefront this season, the comedy is similarly amplified with hilarious moments regarding Eris’ new rival, Nina Farion, daughter of the Sword God. Shibuya, who wrote the new season alongside Naoto Taniuchi, knew just how to make viewers crack up with hilarious one-liners and mid-fight comments that never detract from the scene. It’s a poignant reminder that anime can be just as funny as battle-focused. The new season is already shaping up to be one Mushoku Tensei fans won’t want to miss.

Season 3 of Mushuko Tensei starts streaming July 5 on Crunchyroll.
