Nancy Guthrie has been missing since Feb. 1, and with Mother’s Day upon us, her family is facing an especially difficult moment as questions surrounding her case remain unanswered.
Nancy’s children—Savannah Guthrie, Annie Guthrie, and Camron Guthrie—are among those expected to feel the weight of the holiday, as Mother’s Day often brings added emotional strain for families navigating loss or uncertainty.
Parade reached out to licensed psychologist, certified healthcare ethics consultant, and founder of Shields Psychology & Consulting, PLLC in The Woodlands, Texas, Dr. Jenny Shields, who explained that holidays like Mother’s Day can intensify feelings of grief, uncertainty, and emotional strain for families who are missing a loved one or navigating unresolved loss.
“For many families, Mother’s Day is a joyful blur of brunch reservations, flowers, and handmade cards. But for others, the second Sunday in May is the heaviest day of the year,” Dr. Shields says.
“The first Mother’s Day after a loss often carries a particular kind of pain. ‘Firsts’ in grief have a way of amplifying absence. The empty chair feels louder. The silence feels sharper. Celebration and sorrow collide in ways people rarely expect until they experience it themselves.”
Dr. Shields also discussed how people can approach those who are grieving on Mother’s Day.
“The goal is not to fix someone’s pain. It is simply to let them know they do not have to carry it alone,” Dr. Shields explains. She says sending a message to acknowledge the grief and let the person know you’re thinking about them can be a great way to approach this type of situation.
“‘I know today may be especially hard without your mom. I’m thinking of you today and sending you love. No need to reply,'” Shields suggests as a text or even an email. Another option might be something like “‘I know today might feel heavy and complicated. I just wanted you to know I’m thinking about you.'”
For the Guthrie family, they are dealing with many emotions due to the ongoing mystery surrounding Nancy’s disappearance. Investigators believe that Nancy was abducted from her home in the middle of the night. What exactly happened, however, isn’t clear.
