Rajkummar Rao’s filmography is full of Netflix Original dark comedies, from the series Guns & Gulaabs to the movies Ludo and Monica, O My Darling. When Rao started his own production company and wanted to make his own dark comedy, he turned to Netflix.
Rao stars in the maiden production for his new company, Kampa Film: the Netflix Original Hindi movie Toaster. His wife and business partner, actress Patralekhaa (Wild Wild Punjab), takes on the role of producer for the project. She says of the couple’s new venture:
Stepping into production with Kampa Film has been an incredibly meaningful milestone for us, and beginning this journey with Netflix — who have consistently championed distinctive and unconventional stories — makes it even more special. Toaster immediately stood out because it finds humour in the most unexpected places, and the moment we read it, we knew it was a story we wanted to bring to life. Being our very first film makes the experience even more personal for us. Having such a wonderful ensemble come together for this journey has been truly exciting, and we can’t wait for audiences to dive into this entertaining and unpredictable ride.
Toaster marks the feature directorial debut of Vivek Daschaudhary, who previously worked as second unit director on Guns & Gulaabs. The story is created by Parveez Shaikh (Darlings), who co-wrote the screenplay with Akshat Ghildial (Badhaai Do) and Anagh Mukerjee (Pill).
What is the plot of Toaster?
Here’s how Netflix describes the plot of this offbeat comedy:
Ramakant [is] an endearing, no-nonsense kanjoos (miser) who believes every rupee saved is a victory. Whether it’s squeezing value out of everyday situations or refusing to let go of anything he’s spent money on, Ramakant takes thrifting to a whole new level. So when a toaster he gifted for a wedding ends up going to waste, he sets out to retrieve it, dragging himself — and everyone around him — into a series of increasingly messy situations, where every attempt to set things right only makes matters worse.
Who is cast in Toaster?
Rajkummar Rao stars as Ramakant, a miser.
Sanya Malhotra plays Ramakant’s beleaguered wife, Shilpa. Malhotra is just as much of a fixture in Netflix Originals as Rao, having co-starred in Ludo with him in addition to fronting the Original films Kathal, Pagglait, and Meenakshi Sundareshwar.
Other key cast members include:
- Archana Puran Singh (The Great Indian Kapil Show)
- Abhishek Banerjee (Rana Naidu)
- Farah Khan (director of Om Shanti Om)
- Upendra Limaye (Choked)
- Jitendra Joshi (Thar)
- Seema Pahwa (Mai: A Mother’s Rage)
