Netflix’s ‘A Different World’ Reboot is Nostalgia Done Right

When A Different World premiered on NBC September 24, 1987, it became “a cultural earthquake,” to quote NBC News writing about the series in 2017. A spin-off of the equally significant sitcom The Cosby Show, A Different World examined the world of HBCUs (historically Black colleges and universities), while examining the issues and topics affecting Black young adults in the late ’80s and ’90s. Releasing a year shy of the original show’s 40th anniversary is a new Netflix reboot of the series that looks not only at the new generation of HBCU attendees to the fictional Hillman College, but looks at what happened to the original graduating class from the initial series.

Across the show’s ten episodes, we’re introduced to Deborah Wayne (Maleah Joi Moon), the daughter of Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert (Kadeem Hardison and Jasmine Guy, respectively). Forced to go to Hillman, Deborah is determined to live life on her own terms. Unfortunately, her past keeps coming back to haunt her. Not only does her father become interim president of the university, but Deborah’s ex, Shaquille (Cornell Young IV), is also attending Hillman. As Deborah struggles to find herself, she meets all manner of new friends, with the school coming together to deal with the university’s dwindling finances, the loss of funding, and other outside threats. 

Netflix’s take on A Different World might feel familiar to those who watched Peacock’s reboot of Saved By the Bell. Both series are reboots of popular late ’80s sitcoms focused on young people, with reboots that balance and integrate the original show’s cast with a new crop of offspring of those same original characters. The legacy characters are firmly supporting players, though they do have their own issues. Whitley and Dwayne, the fulcrum by which the majority of the show spun around after its first season, are struggling with their marriage. The pair are separated when audiences meet them, and the first season of this reboot brings up questions of whether they’ll get back together.

Legacy Characters Step Up

It’s clear both Dwayne and Whitley have never left these characters, as Hardison and Guy slip back into them effortlessly. Though each has their own individual plots, because Hardison is given the role of interim president of Hillman, it’s on him for the majority of the series to handle the adult portion of the show. He’s strong yet compassionate. He understands Hillman’s significance, yet can’t figure out how to balance the budget without hurting the faculty, problems facing all manner of HBCUs in an era of dwindling funding. And yet Dwayne and Whitley aren’t just overseeing Hillman. They’re also parents to a student, and throughout the narrative, they’re forced to balance the needs of their child with their own personal desires as well as the school. 

Other legacy characters do pop in as well. Darryl Bell’s Ron Johnson now has a son of his own in Shaquille, a successful football player who has put aside a promising career to go to college. The pair are also mourning the loss of Shaquille’s mother. Jada Pinkett Smith, Cree Summer, and others from the original series are also present and accounted for. And, yes, there is a reference towards the end to Denise Huxtable, Lisa Bonet’s character from The Cosby Show that brought A Different World into existence. Bonet doesn’t make an appearance but here’s hoping that by season two we might see Denise’s return.

But as fun as it is to see the original cast, it is in the next generation that this interpretation of A Different World cements itself. Moon’s role as Deborah (that’s Deb-orah) Wayne is one that, in the wrong hands, could be annoying. Moon is as charming as both Hardison and Guy, so it’s easy to see them all being related. Yet as the season goes on it’s clear Deborah has a penchant for self-sabotage, often the result of her impulsivity. Whether it’s racking up $14,000 in charges on her parents’ credit cards, her questionable grades, or pretending she knows a pop star and can get them to perform at an event, Deborah is quick on her feet but often looks for answers later.

Eventually, Deborah is presented with the possibility she might have ADHD. If anything, A Different World is one of the few shows to portray ADHD in young women accurately (speaking from personal experience). For women, it’s not hyperactivity but often impulsive spending, getting easily overwhelmed, and procrastinating. Initially, Deborah is hesitant about the diagnosis, and while everything is wrapped up in a pretty neat bow, it’s nice to see someone actually examine it properly.

Exploring the Broader Hillman Community

All of Deborah’s friends also have intriguing sideplots, each one worthy of your time and attention. Roommate Rashida (Alijah Kai) becomes interested in social justice while going on a journey involving her virginity. Friends Hazel and Amir (Kennedi Reece and Jordan Aaron Hall) must navigate what happens when the former, an overly religious and sheltered young woman, discovers Amir, her best friend, has hooked up with her boyfriend. What could be a sitcom plot expands out to questions of sexuality and religious intolerance for homosexuality. Chibuikem Uche’s Kojo, a Ghanaian-Nigerian transplant who wants to get into fashion, yields an especially fun episode as he tries to convince his parents to support his dream.

The original series dealt with serious topics, from date rape to stereotyping and racism. With only ten episodes to its name, these “very special episodes” aren’t particularly frequent on the new iteration. A loss of funding for students points at the federal government being involved, but there’s more emphasis on Hillman mismanagement from former President Davenport (Jenifer Lewis) than anything else. A later episode involving a bomb threat against several HBCUs, including Hillman, is certainly sobering, though the threat of anything bad actually happening doesn’t exist. A brief moment with Kojo and an ICE agent, which could have actual consequences and is an all-too-sad reality, sadly gets relegated to the season finale. 

This new take on A Different World has an opportunity to not only connect with new audiences, but lead them toward checking out the original (which you can also stream on Netflix). The new cast is a lot of fun to watch, and the legacy characters remain as great to watch as they were in 1987. It does still feel like a Netflix series in terms of filmmaking and brief episode order, but it’s a solid entry in their nostalgic reboots.
