Netflix's No. 1 Movie Right Now Revives a Wild '90s Thriller

8 April 20263 Mins Read

If you’ve been scrolling Netflix lately and feeling a little déjà vu, you’re not alone.

The current number one movie on Netflix is a remake of Anaconda and it’s tapping straight into ’90s nostalgia in a big way.

The original Anaconda, released in 1997, became a cult favorite thanks to its over-the-top thrills, jungle setting and unforgettable performances from stars like Jennifer Lopez and Ice Cube. It wasn’t exactly subtle, but that was part of the appeal.

It was the kind of movie you watched with friends, half on the edge of your seat and half laughing at just how wild it all was.

Now, decades later, the story is back and finding a whole new audience.

The Anaconda remake has a surprisingly stacked (and slightly unexpected) cast—especially if you’re used to the original. Here’s a quick, clean breakdown of who’s in it:

  • Paul Rudd
  • Jack Black
  • Steve Zahn
  • Thandiwe Newton
  • Daniela Melchior
  • Selton Mello

Like any good remake, there are a few cameos. Ice Cube makes an appearance, and Lopez, 56, is also referenced and appears briefly depending on the cut you’re watching.

The vibe is very different this time around. Instead of a straight thriller, this version leans into a meta, slightly comedic angle—following a group trying to remake the original movie…only to run into a real giant anaconda.

The original was all tension and jungle horror. This one mixes that with humor and a cast that’s a lot more comedic than you might expect.

While details around the remake may feel updated for today’s viewers, the core idea remains the same: a group heads deep into the jungle, only to encounter something far more dangerous than they bargained for. It’s a formula that still works, especially for viewers craving something fast-paced, slightly campy and easy to jump into.

And that’s likely part of why it’s climbing the charts.

There’s something comforting about revisiting familiar titles, even in a new form. For those who remember the original, it’s a chance to re-experience a piece of pop culture history with a modern twist. And for younger viewers, it’s an introduction to a story that’s been lingering in the cultural conversation for years.

Nostalgia has been driving a lot of what we watch lately, and the Anaconda remake is a perfect example. Whether it’s reboots, remakes or long-awaited sequels, audiences continue to show up for stories they recognize.

Of course, not every remake lands with longtime fans. Some go in with skepticism, wondering if anything could capture the same energy as the original. But judging by its current ranking, curiosity alone is enough to push this one to the top.

So if you’ve been wondering what everyone is watching right now, this throwback-inspired thriller might be worth adding to your queue.
