One of Calgary’s biggest parks is filled with towering trees and pathways

You’ve probably noticed the air getting a little brisk around Calgary, and the leaves slowly transitioning from bright green to vibrant shades of yellow, orange, and red. As autumn settles in, Calgary parks are starting to take on a whole new look, and one park in particular is about to be covered in colour.

Confederation Park is one of Calgary’s largest parks, spanning 162 hectares across the city’s northwest. It’s known for its large trees, a winding creek and plenty of pathways and bridges that weave through the space. And once the leaves begin changing, the park transforms into a sea of colour.

What can you do at Confederation Park?

There are a few different ways to spend the afternoon at Confederation Park. You can pack a picnic and find a spot on one of the grassy areas, bring the kids to the playground, or challenge your friends to a game of tennis.

There’s also a gorgeous flower and rock garden, a duck pond, and plenty of wetland areas to wander through.

If you’re bringing little ones along with you, the natural playground has a giant Voyageur canoe, a multi-level fort and a sand area with a water pump.

The park is also home to a nine-hole golf course that is located at the northern end of the park.

What makes the park so colourful?

A big part of Confederation Park’s fall scenery comes from the variety of trees throughout the area. According to the City of Calgary, you’ll find balsam poplars, water birch, willows, ash, and spruce scattered across the park.

As the weather cools, the deciduous trees begin changing colour, brightening the park with shades of yellow and orange, while the spruce trees stay green.

What kinds of wildlife can I spot at Confederation Park?

The wetlands that line the park are home to a variety of wildlife, so you could spot everything from ducks and geese to muskrats during your visit. According to the City of Calgary, Mallards, blue-winged Teal, Canada geese, and several species of gull can be found around the park.

What’s the history behind the park?

Confederation Park was created in 1967 to celebrate Canada’s Centennial. Before it became the park you know today, the area was known as the North Hill Coulee.

According to the City of Calgary, the park was transformed from the coulee’s steep and rugged slopes into the gently rolling hills you see today. Its design drew on the Picturesque style, which originated in England in the 18th century.

What makes Confederation Park stand out?

Confederation Park is one of the first parks in Canada to receive the Green Flag Award. According to the City of Calgary, the park was recognized alongside Reader Rock Garden for the second year in a row. The award recognizes parks and green spaces for their management, maintenance, and overall experience, and both parks were among the first in Canada to receive it in 2025.

Where is the park located?

The park is located in northwest Calgary and stretches across a large area between 24th Avenue and 30th Avenue NW, from 14th Street NW toward 10th Street NW.

Because the park covers 162 hectares, it doesn’t have one main entrance. The park has multiple access points, so where you enter depends on what you want to do. The City of Calgary has a park map showcasing the different sections and entry points, which is worth checking before heading out.

Is there parking available at Confederation Park?

Multiple parking lots surround the park, including near 30th Avenue NW and several lots on the 10th Street NW side.

If you’re heading to the playground or picnic area, you’ll want to park on the north side of the park rather than near the golf course.
