Glen Hansard, an Irish musician who starred in the 2007 movie “Once,” has died at the age of 56.
The BBC reports that Hansard was killed in a single-vehicle crash, with The Irish police issued a news release asking for any witnesses to come forward.
“Shortly before 4:30am, Gardaí and emergency services were alerted to a collision involving a motorcycle on the R109 Lower Road, between Tinkers Hill (R121) and Rugged Lane,” the news release reads. “The motorcyclist, a man in his 50s, was treated at the scene but was pronounced deceased a short time later.”
Following news of his death, ATC Management, which represented Hansard, issued a statement.
“With broken hearts we announce the passing of Glen Hansard who passed away, in the early hours of this morning, following a road traffic accident in Dublin. Glen’s family is deeply shocked and heartbroken by this tragic loss and respectfully requests privacy at this extremely difficult time. The family is grateful for the support they have received and wishes to thank the emergency services who attended the scene,” they said, per the BBC.
Hansard was the frontman of Irish rock band The Frames and also starred in the 2007 movie “Once” alongside singer Markéta Irglová, which told the story of two struggling musicians in Dublin who fall in love. In the movie, Hansard won the Best Original Song Oscar for “Falling Slowly” at the 80th Academy Awards.
Fans paid tribute to the singer on social media.
“Incredibly shocked and saddened to hear this. What an amazing life he had. Ive many many found memories him and his music. Rip Glen,” one person commented.
“Absolutely heartbreaking. Glen Hansard’s music, especially Falling Slowly, touched so many people. Rest in peace, and condolences to his family and loved ones,” another person shared. “A huge loss for music and film. His work inspired so many people around the world. Rest easy, Glen Hansard.”
