Outdoor movie nights to check out around Calgary this September

17 August 20264 Mins Read

September is just around the corner, and even though the weather might start to cool down, Calgary’s outdoor movie season isn’t quite finished yet. Several screenings are planned around the city next month, giving you a few more chances to swap the couch out for a spot under the stars.

We’ve rounded up what’s playing and where you can catch it, so you can start planning your month and make the most of the warm weather before fall officially arrives.

High Park is kicking off September with a rooftop screening of Zombieland. The movie will be shown on a 30-foot inflatable screen on the sixth level of the City Centre Parkade, with the downtown skyline in the background. There’s astroturf seating on the rooftop, so bring a blanket or a low lawn chair, and get there early if you want a good spot.

If you’re driving, you can park in the parkade underneath the space, which makes it pretty easy to get to the screening.

When: Thursday, Sept. 3, 2026
Time: Doors open at 8 p.m., screening starts at 9 p.m.
Where: High Park, City Centre Parkade – 340 10th Ave. SW, Calgary, Alta.
Cost: Free

Cinema on 17th is turning Tomkins Park into an outdoor movie theatre for a weekend of free films, live performances and entertainment as part of Calgary Culture Days.

There will be 11 movies to choose from, but one of the coolest additions this year is the new Saturday Morning Cartoon Package, created in collaboration with Calgary’s Underground Film Festival. So, instead of waiting until the evening to catch a movie outside, you can start your Saturday with a lineup of cartoons in the park.

When: Friday, Sept. 11 to Sunday, Sept. 13, 2026
Time: Friday: show times at 3 p.m., 5:30 p.m., and 8 p.m.; Saturday: show times from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Sunday: show times from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Where: Tomkins Park – 17th Ave. SW and 8th St. SW, Calgary, Alta.
Cost: Free

Coach Hill and Patterson Heights are getting together for the seventh annual Movie in the Park this September, with The Goonies taking over the big screen at Prominence Park.

The evening will start well before the movie, with food trucks rolling in at 4:30 p.m., serving lemonade, tacos, churros, and gourmet hot dogs. Popcorn will also be available for purchase to help set the mood.

When:  Friday, Sept. 11, 2026
Time: Food trucks from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Movie starts at 7:15 p.m.
Where: Prominence Park – Patterson Blvd, and Patterson Dr. SW, Calgary, Alta.
Cost: Free

Two Calgary neighbourhoods, Sunalta and Scarboro, are teaming up for a movie night at Royal Sunalta Park, but there’s a little mystery surrounding what will actually be playing on the screen.

A public vote closed on Aug. 15, giving people three movies to choose from: Brave, The Parent Trap, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The winning film hasn’t been announced yet, so for now you’ll have to wait and see which one gets the most votes!

When: Friday, Sept. 11, 2026
Time: Movie starts at 7 p.m.
Where: Sunalta Park – 15th Ave. SW, Calgary, Alta.
Cost: Free

The Calgary International Film Festival is taking over Eau Claire Plaza for a full day of movies, music and family-friendly fun. The event will feature three films throughout the day, starting with a 20th anniversary screening of Space Jam. Then it’s time for Best in Show, a tribute to Catherine O’Hara, before things take a turn with Scream closing out the night.

There will also be music, activities and entertainment happening throughout the day, so you can make a whole day out of it before settling in for the next movie.

When: Saturday, Sept. 26, 2026
Time: Not yet announced
Where: Eau Claire Plaza – 101 Barclay Parade SW, Calgary, Alta.
Cost: Free

So, which one are you adding to your September plans?
