Psychologists Say You Should Never Offer This Kind of Parenting Advice—Even if You Mean Well

6 October 20264 Mins Read

Parenting is one of the most deeply personal, vulnerable and exhausting journeys a person can take. From the moment a child arrives, parents navigate a relentless stream of choices: sleep schedules, screen time, discipline, dietary needs and educational paths (to name a few). In the middle of this high-stakes balancing act, it often takes just a single offhand remark from a friend, family member or well-meaning spectator to throw a parent into a tailspin of self-doubt and shame.

We have all been there. You are watching a friend handle a toddler tantrum at a restaurant, or listening to a relative explain their teen’s bedtime routine, and a bit of “helpful” advice pops into your head. You might genuinely want to offer a quick solution, relieve their stress or share something that worked for your own family. However, top mental health experts warn that unsolicited opinions on parenting decisions do far more harm than good—no matter how pure your intentions might be.

When you voice judgment or offer unprompted advice about how someone raises their children, the impact almost always overrides the intent. Instead of feeling supported, the parent feels critiqued, isolated and defensive. Understanding why parenting is such a sensitive topic—and learning what to say instead—can salvage your closest relationships and foster true emotional safety.

Why Unsolicited Parenting Advice Always Backfires

Parenting decisions are rarely made in a vacuum. They are shaped by a complex mix of personal values, cultural background, medical advice, financial reality and trial-and-error. When an outsider steps in to offer an opinion, it instantly disrupts the parent’s sense of confidence.

As clinical psychologist Dr. Noëlle Santorelli explained in a Parade article on things you should always keep to yourself, offering unprompted thoughts on personal matters frequently crosses an invisible line.

“While you may think you’re offering helpful advice or perspective, unsolicited input can feel judgmental or shaming—especially in areas as personal and emotionally charged as parenting,” she noted.

When a parent receives unsolicited feedback, their immediate emotional reaction is usually self-defense rather than openness. Dr. Santorelli emphasized that “judgment rarely inspires true change and it can actually make people feel defensive, disconnected or less safe being themselves around you.”

Rather than listening to your suggestion, the person on the receiving end is forced to erect psychological walls to protect their self-worth and parenting choices. Over time, these subtly offensive comments containing “well-meaning advice” cause parents to pull back, share less and distance themselves from people who constantly evaluate their choices.

Additionally, commenting on a parent’s choices often reveals more about the speaker than the family being observed. The psychologist added that “commenting on how someone chooses to eat, live, work or even rest often says more about your own values than theirs,” urging people to prioritize “impact over intent.”

How To Support Parents Without Offering Advice

If unsolicited opinions tear down trust, what can you do to support a parent who seems to be struggling? Experts agree that shifting your mindset from giving solutions to practicing empathy can instantly change the dynamic.

If a friend or loved one has not explicitly asked, “What do you think I should do?”, the best default response is silence or gentle encouragement. As Dr. Santorelli pointed out, “If someone asks for your insight, that’s a different story—and in those cases, it’s important to respond with compassion, curiosity and care.”

Instead of saying phrases like “You really should try…” or “If I were you, I would never let them…”, try stepping into an empathetic role. Validate their hard work with simple statements like, “Parenting is so tough, but you are doing an amazing job,” or ask, “How can I support you right now?”

By swapping judgment for genuine connection, you create a space where parents feel safe, respected and truly seen.
